Sunburn Lotions

-Ever a worshipper of the virtue of self- reliance , ever a foe to spinelessness , The Mears Newz is early and often to tell the people to get ready for winter , to get jobs of their own and to avoid the canes and crutches of the relief bureau . One fel- low who worked on the river - widening WPA project said he never had such an easy job in his life . He said he only worked about three hours a day at easy work and went fishing the rest of the time . I suppose the boys sort of took turns at the fishing game while a few of the others wriggled their shovels a little once in a while . I never happened to hear of any of the boys cracking their shovel handle by lifting too big a shovelful of dirt . Most of the fellows that get on the job seem to hang on year after year . If they earned half the wages working at a private job and got along on that it would be more to their credit . When you work for a business that is getting millions of dollars in the red because of you and your " fellow employees , " it is not so good . If you are peddling peanuts for a peanut dealer and earn- ing $ 1.50 a day and knowing that you earn it and that your em- ployer's business is making money , that is something to be proud of . But if you " work " for a philanthropy and get twice that much and ac- cept it knowing that every day you " work " the government is losing money on you it is not something to be proud of . If the American mil- lions would only deify the virtues of self - reliance and abhor public charity we would have our country in brighter , better shape . Does it make you cheerful to be working for a business that is going millions of dollars in the red ? We give you an extract of a letter from W. J. Branstrom , famous Fremont attorney . It was dated attorney . It was dated May 1 , 1934 . Dear Mr. Lathers : I heartily agree with you when you say , " We are only educating our people to be dependent , to be reashing for a hand- out , to be expecting relief at all times . " How much better it would be if Michigan would say to its unemployed this spring , " Here are shov- els , hoes and garden seeds ; now get out and raise your summer's food and your winter's living . Raise potatoes and squash and put them into

your cellar . Then with your winter's food in the cellar and your win- ter's wood in the wood pile , you will not be a burden upon society . That is the way to lead the people to be self - reliant . Those preach- ments are sound and must be practiced by the people if our democra- tic institutions are to continue . Yours sincerely , Wm . J. Branstrom . At the Spencer farm near the Hart fair grounds a team of harvest hands from Muskegon have been pulling off the cherries at high speed . Paul Bigelow is one of them and he seems to have a rubber stomach with great stretching capacity and ability to keep on eating . Russel Hilliard can spit cherry pits the farthest ; James Morton can get the most cherry stains on his shirt ; Leonard Barber is the laziest of the bunch , and Gene Spencer is the water boy . - Anne Ripley with a big red handkerchief for a turban is the house guest of the Ribbeck family at Little Point Sable , and she helps Janet and Cynthia put the jig saw puzzle together . - Jim Schrump and Doris Lawhorn and Lyle Sheldon and Grace Genung were hitting the highways Sunday . - Leslie Pech- umer had a grand time when he took Jean Bush to the dance Satur- day night . - Leslie Pechumer and Oliver Satterlee took Dorothy Schrump and her sailor boy friend up to Wolf's store to get some treats , but a naughty Oliver and Leslie ran away and left them there , and Dorothy never could see how she drank all that pop . - Rudolph Wentzloff needs a housekeeper , weight about 140 pounds , to wash his supper dishes and cook his oatmeal . - Ervin Steir was down at Stony Lake Saturday night showing the people some of his new fancy steps . -Norrine Nesbitt comes from Montague in her coupe to see Rein- hardt Moschke . - Pete Burmeister went to the school meeting and all he could talk about was new toilets for the school . Orville Canter was in a hurry to make a motion to adjourn . He didn't even went to hear the minutes read . - Mrs . Elizabeth Fox is picking cherries for Charlie Fowler . She thinks he is a good time - keeper and Charlie thinks she is a prize cherry picker . - Miss Grace Kaltz , dark haired and 19 , is up from Detroit rusticating on Peach Ridge and visiting her friend , Alma Jacobs . - Art Stier thinks nobody loves him and his hands are cold and he ought to go to Stony Lake on Saturday night . and get acquainted with some Chicago girls . - Saturday night Louis Schrump took his good looking girl friend from Hart to the Lumber- jack Centennial in Muskegon . - Paul Hinds ' little goatee tickles the girls at Little Point Sable . - Floradale gave a party for Malcom Wood on his 45th birthday . - Luke Doyle has been cutting some fancy curves on the surface of Silver Lake in his speed boat , but he returned to Chicago Sunday night and after a few days the curlycues will all be smooth again . - Ed Burns launched his new Cris - Craft on Silver Lake but he should have made a ceremony of it and spilt a bottle of straw- berry pop on the propeller blade . Harry Sackriter , commonly called " Sackie " at Floradale , is a good crolf player and has been trying to teach Luke Doyle a few pointers . - S . M. Wilson , who arrived Satur- day at Floradale , already has al Ithe women around him . - Is it true that Russell Easton is mixing into the love affair of Ben Cober and Jean Rowley ? -Why does Hannah Fuller come down to Shelby , four times a week . Would she go with Don Ferris ? Is Howard Garver sit'll passing his hat for the Salvation Army ? Boys , why be lonely . Call on Ellen Burmeister , the peroxide blonde at Peach Ridge , She has beautiful curly hair and blue eyes . Don't miss your chance.-

Hubert Burmeister likes fishing , but prefers going with blondes who feed him honey sandwiches for lunch . When Alma Jacobs was a young girl in high school she was sure she wanted to be a lawyer , but now she is a successful manager of a day nursery . If Frank Lam- brix needs more binder twine , Phil Bailey sells the best . - The cow- bells will ring in the wilderness this fall if Betty Farmer gets a charivari in September - David Speer of Chicago , having finished the university , would like to teach school this fall . - Bill Jacobs , who dishes up gasoline in Detroit , was up for a few days visiting his sum- mer sweetheart , Elsie Easton . - Jim Bartlett has quit driving tractor and has gone into society . He is keeping watch over a new Crystal . -Mrs . Fred Kennedy used to keep that ancient hall tree at the bot- tom of the stairs , but one day some time ago she fell down stairs and she told her husband he ought to move the hall tree out and put a feather bed in its place . When Mr. Kennedy heard later that his wife had fallen down stairs he called for someone to get him the camphor quickly . Mrs. Kennedy said : " One would think it was you that fell down stairs . " Mr. Corliss isn't working at the Harrison Basket fac- tory any more since he popped the boss , Bill Benning , in the jaw . Leona Corliss works there just the same but her husband labors at the canning factory . Ward Heath and family of Pontiac are visitors at Silver Lake dunes this week , where Mrs. Heath climbed so much she lost ten pounds . Their daughter , Dorothy , enters junior college this fall . Her little brother , Ward , Jr. , mentions the boy friend Sis left behind and now pines for under the pine trees . With them are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams of Battle Creek with a fairy princess 11 years old named Donna , and young son Bob , who caught a 15 inch fish and was photographed 28 times coming down the sand dunes on his skiis . For posing as an artist's model he received 15e from the photographers . Carl Blackmore , who prints Postum cereal boxes for Mr. Post , is afraid to go in the water . He would rather be black more . Arthur Williams got a charliehorse doing his climbing unexpertly . Mother Williams is here for her seventh year : Chas . Williams does not drink tea , coffee or milk , chew tobacco or spit cotton . - The berry pickers from Kerr's Berryland had a marshmallow fry and frank- fort fire in the yellow hills and Bernice Jasick was the Indian prin- cess in the war dance . Stanley did some Apache steps and Cecil Kerr efficiently emitted the blood - curdling yells . - Malcolm Wood handed a large cooking spoon to Elaine Thornton and asked " Do you want - a spoon ? " And she answered : " Is there anything in it ? " - I like Barbara Franklin's new nipponese sun hat because under it she has a ready Lee back - flash for all the bright remarks you can say to her . Ted and Janet Frech like to watch the moonlight fro mthe Floradale light- Lake house tower . - Kinsie Dormire , who runs K's camp at Silver has overnight cabins for $ 8 a week up , with boat included if you take them by the week . These cabins are newly built , newly furnished , and are equipped with stoves and dishes for light housekeeping . Some are for two people , some for four or more . They are cute , cozy and con- venient . Frank Downing , Mears , wants a few more cherry pickers.- . FARI , JONASSEN Ontometrist
