Auctions and Frosts

to

Frost threats and snow spits were in the glowering October sky as Frank Whittaker , the ardent auctioneer with the oversize vest , gathered the chilly crowd before Chris Feil's grisly granary beside the grindstone in the back yard , and proceeded to expose to public vendue , miscellaneous chains and cant hooks , bolts and whiffletrees which Joe kept forever bringing out . Oxel Anderson got four or five pulleys which might go to show he was tired of pulling up a galvanized pail out of the cistern and want- ed to rig up an old oaken bucket to sing to when he came in all thirsty and sweaty out of the harvest field . John Riggs got some cultivator shoes and Oscar Worth was pleased with his 80c cross cut saw . Candy jars went to Adolph Richter and Dot Lambrix . She was anxious buy another one , as the field mice are plentiful on her hillside and she wanted to protect her Christmas gum drops . Nels Anderson bought a buggy whip and a scythe without a blade . Mrs. Gus Hermann bought a few dishes to take up to Blackberry Ridge to eat blackberry pie on . Alexander Stalker , the pony rancher , got a lot of things , including , I think , the tall phonograph and a bunch of records . Frank Whittaker is a good auctioneer and keeps his crowd good natured . He might be whittling whiffletrees in Crystal Valley today but if you are planning to have a sale give him a ring at Morgan's store - We always like to see people who have been industrious and careful in the morning of life serenely situated in life's afternoon so they can settle down in a cozy sitting room and eat apples compacently while the autumn leaves are falling in snug remembrance that the woodpile is wide and long and that the coffee mill will have its grist and the tea kettle will sing its song while winter winds are blowing . In such a cheerful sit- ting I find Capt . McClanathan and his good wife watching the riffling waves on the Pentwater bayou on the sunny southern side of the les- ser lake . With pride the captain glances up at the framed picture of the boat he used to sail up from Chicago to his summer home in Pent

Two years ago he per- sonally reviewed the experience of Whittier's Snow Bound and did not get to town for many a week , but good old Joe Marquis brought them groceries and postal cards . - Joe with the rugged Acadian courage could snowshoe his way out of his forest and across the end of the lake to the village civilization . - The Long Bridge showed the way to an Ozarkian wilderness where the Pentwater plains were ablaze with glorified sassafras and sumac and oak down through the lone prairies where the Deutschmann's live and Mrs. Radomski baked an apple pie for Monday night's supper . - The Golden Fair was merrily in parade on the first day of October with Betty VanTassel dressed up like a black cat that would squeal when you twisted her tail , with red cross nurses and Pilgrim ladies being impersonated by the school children of the neighboring districts . From many miles growers bring in their apples which are packed in neat apple boxes with gaily lithographed labels for the Flying Merkel brand and monster trucks with green lights take big shipments to the outer world . - Mr . She took the overnight case into the Garver house where it stayed along with the dinner buckets and boxes of the other orchard workers . Before quitting time Orlo Garver said : " My wife is coming home tonight , girls , so if you have any things in the house you had better get them out . B. Phillips , the harness man , was remarking Friday : " It used to be that the old pioneers would get to talking together and telling their experiences and what hard times they went through and were able to get by with it , and the fellows who had it the hardest was the best man . I told him I would like to see more emphasis placed in our schools in the teaching of Boy Scout work and girl scouting . If people would be willing to rough it , to en- dure the hardships of the simple life and think it was the smart thing to do , then the perplexities of our social and industrial unrest would not exist , and we would have no welfare problems . I say if millions of people who cannot manage their budgets and become public liabili- ties were led forth into the open country and settled down on 10 acre lots where they were obliged to grow the major portion of their food and where they could go and work out for other people and earn $ 150 a year additional to pay their little taxes and buy sugar and coffee and flour , then the nation's relief problem would be solved .
