Varnish and Daffodils

Dear Roger Allen : We have an art censor at our house and it's my wife . Late in December I went down to the variety store in Shelby and bought an elegant framed picture with a lady reclining on a mar- ble - columned porch beside an ultra marine blue pool up in the magni- ficent mountains . The lady's shoulders were a little undraped and her filmy white cheesecloth flowing robe was a little transparent , but of course I was looking at the beautiful ultramarine pool and those love- ly purple mountain peaks . I was lifting up my eyes to the hills . Well , I took the picture home and presented it to the family for Christmas , and my wife asked : " Who helped you pick that out ? " And right away I saw she didn't like it because the lady didn't have any should- er straps . So I put the picture away in the cold sun parlor where it wouldn't be gazed upon in case the minister came to call . And one day Eva Brubaker , the grocer's daughter - in - law , dropped in for

visit when I was away and my wife showed her the picture . laughed and told a story : Once there was a grocer who ordered 500 calendars with a picture of a lady insufficiently clad , and when they came in December his wife opened them and disapproved , so she re- vised the pictures by retouching them with crayon until they passed her approval . The grocer passed them out to his many customers and then one day one of the men in the village discovered the over - chalk- ing and erased the amendments . Word spread like wildfire among the men and the grocer became a millionaire selling erasers . Yes , that's the story Eva told , and my wife relayed it to me . About two weeks after I saw my beautiful new picture upon the piano and the white transparent dress on the woman lying beside the pool was painted

blue and the dress was much higher on the chest and had shoulder straps painted on . My wife had retouched the painting with her box of water colors and made everything grossly modest . I say , Roger , can you lend me 144 erasers ? -

It seems down at Shelby they don't want the horses to walk on the black top road . They don't want the horses to leave their foot prints on the sands of time . How long will it be before they ask the people to carry their shoes and stockings in their hands so they won't wear out the sidewalks ? Maybe every farmer ought to rarry a pair of pliers and a hammer in a saddle bag so when he comes off the dirt road he can pull the horse shoe nails and put the horse shoes in his pocket and then nail them on after he leaves the black top road again . Or maybe we ought to put rubber heels on the horses ' feet.- The play , " Aunt Samathy Rules the Roost , " presented by the high PHIL room May 7th was extremely well prepared and was enjoyed by every- one . The high room had a wiener roast Friday night at Juniper Beach . A good time was had by all the young folks . - Mr . and Mrs. Richards and baby and Earl Gasahl were week - end visitors at Mr. and Mrs. Lawhorn's . - Florence Johnson is spending the week with her mother . - Mrs . Hilma Johnson , Eddie , Mrs. Westlund and Helen are leaving for Sweden May 29 to spend the summer . The Ladies Aid put on a mother - daughter banquet . - Mears Young People's As- the sociation held its monthly business meeting in the basement of church May 12. - Leslie Pechumer went to Chicago and had a good time riding in the elevators . We wonder why when the boys are in the neighborhood of Cobb they always stop at Keeler's . Is it because they think Hepsey will give them a piece of chocolate cake ? -Ruth Schrumpf must use all of her energy up Saturday night at the Cobb dances hollering , because she has to sleep all day Sunday and even sometimes on Monday she is unable to come to school . - Floella Near tractors expected to feed her Otis mushrooms Wednesday night if her pasture excursion was a success . - Mrs . George Near has a stye on her eye and will be rubbing it with peroxide or else a gold ring . - Chris Near has beautiful rock gardens , one in his front yard and one in the back yard where the honey bees go down to moisten their tongues . - Rob- ert Bedell , the photographer , would like to sell you a Westinghouse refrigerator to keep your cabbage salad cool , a Thor electric washer to perfume to keep your wife's temper sweet , an RCA Victor radio your parlor with contentment , and a Thor ironer to make your bed sheets smooth and cool . Don't you want your picture taken ? See Bob adv . Evelyn Bedell , Hart , and he will will make you good looking . Smith and Tommy Cartwright of Ferry look like Mutt and Feff , but hé would need to get a step ladder to kiss her . - Roy Miller stopped the dances in Ferry because his pump got broken . The young folks danced so hard they were thirsty . He sat up for hours watching in- the side of his house already to spring . Now they are going to move dances ont to Hitower and if he wants to watch the pump handle out there he ought to take a fish shanty out to Hitower and put it on the porch of the dance hall , because the nights are chilly and he might catch a fog in his throat or else a frog . We are all glad to spring come and the time for white shoes , so bring in those old white shoes and we will make them like new . We also have a good variety of white shoe polishes , says Archie Campbell , healer of soles and lift- er of heels on Wood street , Hart , Michigan , Esther Hodges

In Ferry there are two girls named Viola Mae Converse , which might be a little confusing but one Viola Mae lives at the Ar- kin's store and the other one is sometimes designated as Viola Joe because her father's name is Joe , Viola Joe has a new wrist watch which was given her by a boy friend . Vaughn Conroy cut saw teeth in has hat to give the cooties air . A lot of girls in Ferry like to watch the Manistee bread man come in at noon . It was Bill Ma- honey , we hear , who gave the new wrist watch to Viola Joe Converse ,
