That Silver Lake , the beautiful , should be shut off from public gaze or that any portion of its curving shore line road should be blocked off by a greedy group of individuals and closed to public travel is a situation that would be unbearable . To avert such a catastrophe we are this week sounding the alarm to warn all lovers of Silver Lake , all lovers of the dunes , all people who adore winding shore roads , that an ungenerous movement is quietly on foot , initiated by a few private- minded individuals , to shut up the lake shore road from the end of the Meyer road to Floradale . A part of the cottage owners on Adelia Beach want it closed so they can use it for a private front door yard and make you travel on the dusty gravel road back in the woods and look at their out - houses and ice houses and have your view of the lake shut off . They will give you their garbage pails for scenery and keep the lake view for their special personal use . This lake shore drive which is our heritage from our fathers , they , a selfish seven . would close to public travel . We won't stand for it , you won't stand for it , a thousand thinking people will say we'll keep that road open . I went to the county road commission and told them : " You can't close that road without a trial in circuit court . " No , they thought just a little hearing before the commissioners . " I will show you . Get out your public acts of 1927 and you will find an act of the legislature that says a road bordering on a lake or a stream cannot be closed without a petition and a notice published three weeks in a newspaper and then a hearing in the circuit court . At the trial anyone can go in and make objection . " The tourist value of that lake shore alone is worth $ 5,000 a year for the view , even if we who live around these parts had no hearts , no aesthetic feelings , no sense of the beau- tiful . Who wants this road closed anyway ? The people in the alumi- num house talked it up . John Wolf left a lot of vacant spaces and signed the petition quite a ways down so it would look as if he signed it last . It seems John sort of made a business mistake in moving his
road
