Ernest Alderink , the school pest , was putting an ice cube down Dor- cas Hogston's neck when the Shelby chemistry teacher told him he had better watch out or he would have an ice cube down his neck . And if you think that is a cold hearted thing to do , here is some hot news . Lyle Alexander , in agriculture class , had a hot test tube in his hand and Stan Jasick , being touched with a hot test tube , thought it Lyle and swatted him one , whereupon Lyle blacked Stan's eyes.- Chuck Hiddema brought a bat to school and let her fly in agriculture class . - Art Vannette is Doris Kaber's heart flame and inasmuch his father runs an ice cream factory Art might amplify Doris Kaber's affections by bringing her an ice cream cone up from New Era . - How ard VanderWall throws chestnut shucks down Helen Norton's neck.- They were talking about consolidated schools and John Davidson won- dered out loud why Shelby didn't build a large building and have consolidated school . Mr. Henderson said what would we build it with and Jim Sanford said to build it with bricks . - What to do for enter tainment during the long winter months ? It's a question asked by many who have tried all sorts of stunts . But to me it's very easy to answer that one true ; if you'll kindly follow my advice you'll know just what to do . Round up a few of your friends ; they'll spend many a pleasant hour dancing to the music of the serenaders at ye old dance little hall , Hi - Tower . - Tom Brandon and wife are rejoicing over a Elizabeth Rose , or is it Rose Elizabeth . - Long after the six o'clock whistle blows the Corliss Food Shop , where the buses stop , has clerks that are ready to hop around and wait on you with groceries and magazines so you can go home and enjoy the long evening with a full mind and a full stomach . - Mart Brandon , the Leonard gas wind er at the fair ground corner , says : " Winter has laid his cold hand upon Mother Earth it seems . Jack Frost , his right hand man , is hard at work on lakes and streams . When Jack hasn't anything better to do he whiles away the hours painting with brilliant colors all the trees and flowers . But what he likes best to do is thicken your grease and oil and work on your radiator to see if it won't boil . - S.

change to winter oil and grease , we'll fool him , you and I. Put anti- freeze in your radiator , then just watch him cry . " - Edward Bru baker is calling together this week his boy scout finance committee . Mears troop No. 47 is the oldest in the county from the point of per manent organization . It is serving about 20 boys of this community now , helping them to learn the spirit of true Americanism . The com mittee will call on all people of the community for their contribution Scouting is supported entirely by goodwill donations . - Catherine Bartlett doesn't like boats . She says it gets pretty lonesome after one of them carries your boy friend away . Cheer up , Catie , from all re ports he's a good writer . - Jim Bartlett says musty cider may be all right , but he'd rather help Tom Brandon celebrate on something else -Yes sir , you're right ! It's time to change - and that doesn't meal just from light underwear to red flannels , either . All over the coun try millions of motorists are getting ready to change from heavy sum mer oil to lighter winter grades . Have you changed to Winter Golden Shell ? Ivan C. Lewis sells it at the Cherry Hill Ranch gas station at the northern hem of Shelby's outskirts . - Ellen Burmeister thinks it's all right when she wears lipstick but she doesn't like to have her boy friend , Leonard Fenton , wear it because she thinks if her face needs any more color she can use a little rouge to color it up and that Leon ard doesn't need to help her by wearing lipstick . Anyway Ellen , we don't blame you for not wanting to resemble the red man after living in the white race for so long . - Betty Burmeister says : " It must be great to be in love , " after Clyde Keeler took her to a picture show " It surely is , " says Clyde . " When can I take you to another romantic picture ? I'd get more sleep nights if our feelings were mutual . " lems . Neir is the new owner of The Pike Cafe . Mr. Neir is an authority on the hotel and restaurant business , having at one time been connected with the Rowe hotel in Grand Rapids - Larry Weaver registered on an unemployment card many months ago and a few days back the contractor on the new US 31 project north of Shelby sent for Larry to drop around and they gave him a job and Lawrence reported for duty . For a few days they had him with the brush gang and working around the project garage where he got along very well . He had been there maybe almost a week when they suddenly put him on a board scraper , a job with . which he was unfamiliar . After a few minutes as helper the other fellow went away leaving Larry to manage the hickey alone , which he didn't know how . So the boss came back and fired him . Others complain they have been suddenly dismissed the same way . We won der if the boss just loves to hire and fire thataway .
