Overshoes and Snowshovels
Twenty - six years ago this winter Frank Burr , the village black- smith , told me that in the fall he figured to get his cellar ready for winter . He put in all his potatoes and coal and flour and pork and then he just let the winter come . There wasn't much money floating around in the winter but he hammered the anvil a little , blew the bel- lows and just let the winter rave . If all of us followed Frank Burr's recipe there would be little terror in winter . The WPA boys down south of Stony Lake have hoisted an American flag over their road job because they do that way in Muskegon and other places . But in a larger sense there is no special concentration of patriotism here . The existence of these relief projects shows that these men are not the type that followed Frank Burr's example . They are poor managers of the money they take in during the summer and that is why this relief work is being done . There are many other men not on relief who do not follow Frank Burr's example . Some of us try to do so and sue- ceed in part . Yet we would have a far greater sense of winter security if our coal bins were full , our wood piles long and high , our fruit shelves heavy with Mason jars , our pantries laden with flour , our lard tubs and potato bins full . Then let the winter rave . You can read a book or go forth on your skis . Hasten the day when Whittier's " Snow Bound " is a classic in every grade in school , in every ladies ' literary club , when Swiss Family Robinson is a continual theme in high school and the radios preach all through September the gospel of the full cellar and wood pile elongation . The sleigh bells of winter would sound sweeter then , the dumplings in the bean soup would be fluffier and care - free . The still snow on Christmas eve would be a thing of beauty , Pop corn and apples and the old checker board would wear the long winter out . Put another log on the fire , boys , and let the blizzard rave . Teach your children log cabin stories and the happy days of the pioneers . Remember Frank Burr's cellar and his full coal bin .
The little Mears Newz has just sold two more farms for the Han- son - Osborn agency , so those realestaters want you to know that they have another brand new listing . A little 10 - acre place adjoining a vil- lage on which there is a nice little new house , wood house , chicken house and garage , water in house , etc. Land all seeded to alfalfa . Just
