Refrigerators and Radishes

You will be welcome in the services at the Swedis church , Mears . Rev. Wellonder will come up from Muskegon to elabo- rate on a text . - Leo D. Brown of Route 4 , Muskegon , was up in Mears this week with his father doing roof jobs . The Browns used to camp and pick cherries in Mears and we are glad to see them return . C. A. Brubaker and Mrs. Van Valkenburgh were getting some work done.- One of the largest crowded Townsend meetings in Fremont was this week , addressed by Ward B. Long , national representative . - Louis Shoultz , 29 , of Round Lake , was the victim of a fatal accident late Thursday afternoon when he was accidentally killed by an automobile driven by his younger brother , Ernest . Louis had the horses out drag ging a field on his father's farm . It was a warm day and the heat bothered him . Most likely he thought he would take a little rest and cool off . He lay down in the grass of a private driveway next to the tilled ground . Possibly he went to sleep . His brother Ernest came driving back that way with a truck and killed him . There was blood on the victim's forehead . It is thought he might have heard the truck coming and raised his head up to look and then was struck before he could lay completely down . The car wheels straddled the victim . A doc tor was called but pronounced Louis dead . Louis was an exemplary , Christian young man , a faithful attendant of the West Golden Sun-

day school and used his truck to go out and pick up Sunday school scholars for several miles and bring them to services each sabbath . Services will be held for him at the West Golden church Monday aft- ernoon at 2:00 o'clock . - Murray Rossiter runs complete auto service in Hart on US - 31 by the railroad crossing . He sells gas for less and does a complete greasing job for 49c . - How often in walking along a trail through the woods , perhaps picking wild flowers , one is tempted to sit down on the mossy shoulder of an old road , thinking this road- way might not be used for three weeks . You might doze off to sleep and in that perilous interval the unexpected car might come along and kill you . Perhaps we can all learn a lesson from the sad tragedy of Louis Shoultz who was run over in a field on the home farm . If a person isn't safe back in the middle of a field , is he safe anywhere ? We used to think the middle of the sand dunes was one of the safest places in the world to bring up children . You could sit down on the side of a dune in the middle of a desert and read a magazine and if the day was warm and slumberous you could doze off to sleep and awake in perfect safety when you were ready . And your little tots in their sun suits could play with their little sand pails and shovels and drop off to sleep when they were tired . But now that is all changed . Suddenly , without warning , a dune scooter may plunge over the top of that hill and descend on you or your sleeping child . The commercial cupidity of mankind has fixed it so that life is no longer sure even in the middl of the desert . What is the state of Michigan going to do about it ? Are we going to wait until some of our little ones are killed before we do something about this menace ? Parks and playgrounds ought to be safe for children . Shall we allow dangerous hazards like these to dart here and there and every direction over the great playgrounds of the dunes , imperiling the lives of pedestrians and of sleeping and playing chil dren ? What does the public gain by throwing away its safety rights ? Dune scooters may have a place in today's pleasure . We will concede they have . But they should follow one certain beaten and posted route and not run all over everywhere off the highways . A public passenger conveyance for hire should carry omnibus liability insurance which we understand . costs at least $ 100 a year on a car . It should carry an omnibus passenger license which would cost something too . You and I have to pay passenger car licenses on our private cars even when we drive them on the highway , on the straight and narrow way . Should a ten - wheeled special automobile , rip - snorting and zig - zagging all over hell be allowed to run license - free ? Yes , and insurance - free , tax - free and liability irresponsible ? Isn't it time the public woke up to the need of some kind of regulation ? Or must we wait until a child is killed ? With the present hap - hazard policy of non - regulation a tragedy may happen anytime this summer . The Silver Lake country is a mecca for tourists . The state tries to make conditions safe for visitors and home folks . The state has rules about dogs wandering loos in the park . The state board of health inspects the drinking wa ter at the park and resorts to be sure it is safe , And then with thous ands of visitors walking through the dunes shall we allow commer cial greed to run these ten - wheeled potential demons of destruction to cascade over the dunes in perilous zig - zag abandon any time , any . where , without tax , without license , without insurance and without regulation ? It's time we got to thinking . - After Louie Schrump went with Dorothy Prill six months he finally dared to call her gorgeous . Bring in your carpet rags to Mrs. Roy L. Geisinger , corner 6th and Pine , Shelby , and have thin woven into beautiful rigs and carpets
