FIFTY CENTS A YEAR

Snow Spits

In the business and civic life of Mears there will be a great yawning gap caused by the passing of Frank W. Downing , who was buried to- day in the Mears cemetery amidst the testimony of many flowers . He had not been so well of late and during the past two weeks his illness was more pronounced . The family had planned to go to Florida on No- vember 15 after apples were over . Gallstones were part of his trauble . Frank was born May 5 , 1877 , in Newaygo county and came to Mears when a very small child . His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Down- ing . As a young man he clerked in a general store and was in the em- ploy of the Sands & Maxwell Lumber Co. for many years as manager of their hardware store and produce warehouse . Perhaps it was 15 years ago he bought the business out and had operated the local hard- ware since . Late years he owned a farm a mile and a half southwest of Mears and often after he had opened up the store in the morning he would leave his daughter Corrine at the helm and slip away to the life he loved with a couple of hours out in his fields . Around his office stove congress met to regulate the tariff , select presidents , end wars , fix the proper price of cherries and the time to spray for yellows and little peach . Here the villagers came to pay their electric light bills from $ 1.03 to $ 6.87 . He was the notary public who put his big round seal on the deeds when farms and lots changed hands . For a long time he was the treasurer of the Methodist church who paid the preacher and the insurance and made up the deficits in silence . He has lent his business wisdom to the school board . Little children who came to buy nails to make little cars and boats often came home with a rosy- cheeked apple Frank had given them . The joys , the calamities , the frailties of his community passed in review before him . He rejoiced in people's successes and sympathized in their tribulations . He became the heart - throb of his township , the pulse of his community . He was a self made man who traveled a long road and accumulated substance and human understanding . His biogrophy will long be remembered and revered in the hearts of the people of Mears . - Ed . Kokx has reason to be proud of a name quilt made in Weare when St. Joseph's parish still Ead the old church . There are about 200 names sewed on it , as well as outlive pictures of the varochial school , the parsonage and church . One time he was offered $ 100 for the quilt but the names are memories that make it valuable . - Aletha Arkins gets appointed acting postmaster

at Ferry and will move the parcel post scales and the postmark across the road to Arkins Ark where she sells cinnamon and calico . Elizabeth Bowman resigned . - Cliff Strawberry Pratt , who later became Cliff Petunia Pratt , celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary Monday and called in all the relations . He even invited his wife . After Cliff gets large crop of petunias picked and his apples packed he usually goes to Florida , but how will he get there this year unless he rides a bi- cycle ? -Miles Miller will have an auction sale Thursday , Oct. 29 , at 1 p . m . , 6 miles east of Hart and ½ mile south , selling stock , feed , im- plements . Taxpayer , this is the first time in 20 years that Michigan has been in the black . Vote Nov. 3rd . Re - elect Gov. VanWagoner . ( Pol . Adv . ) - I went to the board of supervisors this week to watch the county fath- ers get down to hard facts ( like cement blocks ) about the road com- mission which is rather unsettled , what with Charlie Deyman gra- ciously resigning because the party was too rough , and Ira Fuller sit- ting solid like a cement block even after the grand jury told the super- visors to remove him . Seems he wants to stick to $ 50 a month for life . He gets $ 600 a year and mileage and is supposed to attend a meeting twice a month , but the commissioners meet once a week and run up extra mileage that way . So by " working " two or three hours one day a week he can buy all his groceries and have an easy living and the rest of the time if he wants to he can sit on a cement block out in his dooryard and whittle toothpicks . Judge Simpson , the one - man grand jury , after hearing the testimony of 50 witnesses , said that Ira Fuller should be removed . But there is a certain faction on the board that was averse to even hauling Ira Fuller on the carpet . The grand jury had listed seven reasons stating that Ira Fuller had been guilty of malfeasance and misfeasance and wilful neglect of duty . But it seems seven supervisors had a big whitewash brush and wanted to enamel Ira Fuller snow - white all over . They didn't even want him tried and they voted no when a motion was introduced setting Nov. 5 for the trial to begin and stopping Ira Fuller's pay until the outcome of the trial . The seven who opposed the resolution were Wm . Yonkman , Fred La Porte , Ralph Aldrich . Fred VanSlckle , Guy Reynolds , Charles Rum- sey and Louis Biegalle . The other supervisors voted yes , so it stood 9 to 7 and the motion for the trial carried . But Bill Yenkman of Pent- water worked up a fine wrath and grabbed his hat Thursday around noon and said : " I'm going home and I'm not coming back . " And Friday he was absent and they got along very well without him . It behooves a lot of Oceana's good citizens to watch this matter through , attend some of the sessions when the board hears the case Nov. 5 or thereabouts and see what the supervisor from your township is going to do about it . It seems perfectly apparent that certain forces don't want the flails to fan the big barn floor for fear the floor might erash through and let up a stench from the stables . But we say by all means let the in- vestigation proceed , and if the accused party is innocent his innocence • will become apparent , and if he is guilty then he should be removed . Malfeasance in office is an offense that could be punisred by fine imprisonment . After a grand jury indictment the accused corld he arrested , held for bail or committed to jail to await trial in the eirenit court . When we consider that a petty offender like an itinerant sales- man who has done nothing more than sell some little flag pins on the fair ground , is brought down and thrown in jail , how we marvel that after an alleged large - scale offender is indicted by the grand jury that not only is he allowed to go jail - free and bail - free but that seven super- visors should not want to bother to try him at all - To Keith Corliss for bread and sandwich spreads and fillers for school children and fae- tory men to carry in their dinner pails , adv . - The sympathy of the cam- munity goes to H.
