FIFTY CENTS A YEAR

Douglas and Jeanine Krauter with their new striped tops will make things hum around Silver Hills Farm . Well , the farm is usually hum- ming with activity anyway so it will not be scared when Douglas and Jeanine wind up their tops . - Wednesday was watehnight at the Metho- dist church in Mears and our boys and girls wound up their best watches and put them on their wrists or under their belts . Those who didn't have a watch wound up the alarm clocks and left them on the shelf at home . Games were digested . cookies and cake frosting were eaten and the final hour from eleven onward was spent in a service up- stairs . Dr. Nicholson went up in Canada for a couple of days because his brother was sick there . Nick Hadiaris came home from the Uni- versity of Ann Arbor to see how smooth were the jet black tables in the paternal cafe . - Edith Dempsey goes back now to her teaspoon and thermometer in Columbus . - Jake Tackx brought his wife home from Detroit to see if his mother had any sugared doughnuts in the cookie jar . Jake likes doughnuts better than any other kind of nuts - Milton II . Pugsley was 85 years old the other day . - Vietor and Clarence Pear- son are milking Guernseys at Silver Hills Farm now . Ruth Riddell came home from the chemical city of Midland to eat Christmas break- fast at the breakfast table in her parental home by the creek . - Verne Skinner is down at the Rapids studying the newest styles in neckties and suspenders . - Young Sig Stembol came home from Alabama to spend his academic vacation in the big stone house at Rothbury . - Rev . Gary DeWitt , no relation to DeWitt's little liver pills , announced Sun- day that he had accepted a call to the Hope Reformed church in De- troit . All his members wanted him to stay in New Era . Nevertheless he decided to embark on a new era . The L. E. Ray home was lighted brightly Saturday night as the hat rack was dusted off for a party for Henry Fischer and his bride Dorothy . If the Rays didn't have a hat rack they could borrow one off a reindeer , as that is a sort of horse with a hat rack on . Mrs. Ellen Till hasn't moved into her new house yet Mrs. Cooper in Shelby just built an elegant new house and will get married . But Mrs. Till will probably still be Mrs. Till in her house on the hill - Genevieve Russell brought her Christmas stocking home

from Detroit to Bradyville - Mable Fenton , who has been dipping ice cream cones for Edson's for quite a spell , goes now to Inkster to be Freddy Dean's wife . - Oscar Mauk has been married for 25 years so friends met for a party and gave his wife a chest of silver which wasn't all dimes . - George Henry Cook , 67 , passed away Tuesday eve- ning at the home of his daughter , Laura Webber . - So the year 1942 comes to Mears with a snow storm , and we sit down to conjecture ou what changes the year may bring forth . It is unlike all other years . We stare down the road at the horizon as at a great question mark written on the sky . The Joneses are not going to get a new sedan because they aren't going to make them . Howard Gasahl is not going to get a set of new tires on his Model A because new tires will not be readily obtain- able . When the tires wear out on Ben Fuller's automobile he may put on wagon wheels with iron rims . Maybe Fred Kreigh , the blacksmith , will come back into his own . Or the people may start walking like the editor . If Clayton Riley starts walking down town all the time he will lose a few ounces in 1942. Well , who knows but what we may be dig- ging dugouts in our back yards ? Carrot seeds will be popular in the spring as gardens will be wider and cabbage patches longer . Sugar cards may come back and maybe not . Perhaps we will have gasoline cards or gasless Sundays . What we need is more gasless evenings so there will not be so many accidents and hangovers . All these people in Mears who have been putting on white asbestos rock shingles on the sides of their houses may get out a paint brush and camouflage them to a dull brown . Cherry pickers may be mostly girls this year as the men will be away in the factories working . What effect will the war have on the summer resort business ? It seems it will be less . Profes- sional men in the metropolis may send up their wives and minor chil- dren and themselves be week - enders . But it seems there will be a di- minished resort population . - Don't leave your loose electric cord hang- ing down for your little child to put in his mouth . A small child Beulah was severely burned last week . Sylvan Dale Lathers , 22 , was playing with the Christmas lights when he made a fuse burn out and had a big scare . He said it made a smoke . - Theodore Hoffman , 89 , was buried in Benona Thursday . He lived with his step - daughter , Mrs. Henry Porter - June Marie Rowley was married in Chicago to Paul Mernitz on Dec. 27 , and the day before Jean Margaret Rowley was married by the Christmas tree at home to Raymond Robertson of Hes- peria - Fent Gilson has been a barber for 43 years in Shelby village- When Sylvan Dale Lathers , aged 2 % , was asked what kind of pop he liked he said popcorn . - Here it is January 2 and blizzard overcoats are in order . Cora Ellen Kelley was married on Christmas day at her Uncle John's honse to Kenneth Wygant . Rev. Moore tied the knot in front of the Christmas tree . Ruth Jean Moore was bridesmaid and Milton Fuller was best man - Half an hour earlier Myra Opal Coleson married Wallace Brown . Marjorie Schrumpf and Stanley Brown stood up . - Jerry Congdon . long time druggist in Pentwater who retired two or three years ago , passed away Monday . He leaves his wife , Jennie . and a son . Thomas , who lives in New York City . - Miss Alma Kreigh came up from Chicago in time to hang up her stockings . Her sister Rhea with her husband came later aul took in the New Year's party at the church . They came from North Carolina where Rhea's husband is a military officer . A few acres , that's the thing this coming year . and for years to come , perhaps . You can have twelve of those acres at- tached right to your 5 - room house , barn , chicken house , garage . well and windmill premises , and only a mile out of our glamorous county

There is a fascination about working out a summer home deal in the months of January and February and getting plans all laid for improvements to be made in March and for a week - end visit in April . So make your inquiries now to Eva Hanson - Osborn , Hart , who handles just everything in dirt or sand . - Dell Van Agtmael , who is a missionary in Rawalpindi in India , wrote a letter to her father on August 14 . Pete received it just the other day . - Natalie Johnson and her father and mother were down to Muskegon over Sunday to see Jean , and the house plants in the flat didn't even freeze - Dell Bearss kept his li- cense plates for years back nailed on the garage door . I think he had ene for 1910 and also one way back so far it doesn't have any year on . It was supposed to be issued for the life of the car . One of Dell's first cars was a Reo with carbide lights and you had to crank it : also right- hand drive . Dell thinks Charlie Getty was the first fellow in Shelby who had a Reo.-
