Go on , Oceana , and do your stuff . Sprinkle your marl beds over your acid soils . Reforest your wind - blown hillsides with spruce to sing and nod in the breeze . Plant more cherry trees row upon row that the mu- sic of whistles may blow sweeter and longer on the canning factories . may rest Put more benches on your courthouse lawn that the weary their tired worn heels and arise to leave a benediction . Repopulate your rural districts with the exodus from the cities . Let them come in num- bers and find on your farm lands the genesis of independence and for- tune . Your realtors are the ambassadors who bring new people to live among you . Repopulate your thinned - out neighborhoods with the laugh- ter of many children trudging along to the little red schoolhouse on the new homes . hill . Let the forest ring . Let the axes fell the timber for Repopulate your churches with the faces of people eager to see each other and anxious to guide the pattern of their living by the Eternal Goodness . For in so doing they will find the mosaic of life sweeter the days gy by . On the banks of Campbell Lake , by the waves of Silver , by the rolling pebbles of Stony , by the cobs of Cobmoosa , build cabins for the vacationists to spend their hours of freedom . Along the fringe of ex - timbered pastures teach new poplar trees to flap their leaves for the summer shade of contented cows . Their milk will nourish your families and around the little mounds of fertilizer the four - leaf clovers of good fortune , will grow for you . Go on , Oceana , and do your stuff . And you , Alexander Stalker , with the atmosphere of Montana range ou your shoulders , lead out your saddle horses for the city boys and girls to explore the ancient trails in the blueberry hills . And you , John Flood , groom well your horses . More and more each year the so- journers from the city will discover that Oceana is no mean province in Vacationland . Our dunes are the sandiest , our lakes are scenery , our every orchards are alluring . Go on , Oceana , and do your stuff . Let lumber yard set forth its merchandise , the materials by which dreams are solidified and made tangible . There are nations in the Old World sit little bigger than the space of our 16 townships . Why should we back and think of Oceana as a has - been ? All we need is more ginger and go . more ambition , more leaders with dynamic enthusiasm . How many dried herring are there among us who have made money and are sitting tight on the barrel when they could he using it to build

apon row of much - needed homes in our country villages , homes that would bring hundreds of more settlers who are scouring the want ads for houses to live in . Their children could play in our streets , put their feet under desks in our schoolhouse , bring a needed abundance of reve- nue to our school districts and prosperity to our stores and business places . You who have made big money in cherry crops and are sitting on the barrels , wake up and begin to build . Cast your bread upon the waters and it will come back to you . Two of the richest women in Mears in recent years were so downright conservative that not for many years would they loosen up and spend as much as 50e for The Mears Newz , which for three decades has proclaimed the climate and the beauty and the welcome hand of Oceana , with all its available re- sources . Theodore Roosevelt's country life commission filed in its re- port that no one who lived in the country and made his living in the country had to know so much and render so much service to his community for the little he got out of it as the country editor . Down through its 33 years of struggle and success this paper never raised its subscription price in order that it might continue to talk to the great- est number and extol this wonderland to the listening world . Always and always it was a voice crying in the wilderness to bring people into the promised land . Won't some of the rest of you have faith like that ? Be on fire for the beauty and value of Oceana county , eager to bring in new settlers , eager to make the newcomers happy that they may find the anchorage of contentment among us . And those of you who eau , if you have idle inactive dollars , won't you build houses to rent and sell and see how soon they will fill up with new neighbors with children playing in the dooryards ? At no time that you can remember has there ever been a more crying need for housing . More houses in Mears will mean more prosperity in our village . More homes in Oceana will mean more awakened schools and countrysides , more companionship and neighbors . We who believe in Oceana don't want our county to be a dead cemetery of the yesterdays . We want it to be a living , growing thing . If we had a hundred people among us with the optimism , the alertness , the live - wire enthusiasm of Eva Hanson - Osborn what a new life Oceana would put on ! Awake , thou that sleepest . let us make 1948 a great year for building , for reaching out for new neighbors and new life . Go on , Oceana , and do your stuff . I believe in you , I have faith in you . I am for you 100 per cent . Let us make this a year of progress- A very powerful wrecking car is the wrecker of the Flood Motor Sales , which was called out the other day to near McCarty's store to pull a big truckload of electric light poles out of the ditch . You phone number G1 by day and number 1 by night after closing hours . - The Methodist women who do parish needlework convened yesterday with Mrs. Walter Feasel at her house beside a for- est on a hill and the ladies held trays on their knees . - Very shocking to the Mears community was the fatal accident to William H. Coleson and Clande Marshall Monday morning on US - 16 near Muskegon when the Marshall truck loaded with apples for Flint collided with a big truck loaded with 18,000 pounds of scrap iron .
