Potato Flowers

be

When a wise housewife takes her purse and goes to the store to get groceries she does not begin to order hilariously without reckon , but shops within the limits of her pocket book . When a wise school board be- gins spending it should first count the money in its treasury before it gets hilarious and needlessly spends six hundred dollars for unneces- sary transportation that the people of the district never authorized and which they protested against . And a wise school board , if it is al- ready insolvent and in the red , will not vote lavish and unnecessary in- creases of salary to teachers and the janitor . Why pay $ 200 and $ 210 to teachers for teaching the split - up elementary grades without an atom of janitor work to do when women teachers from the country would gladly accept $ 175 , saving the Mears school $ 460 a year ? Of course they might not be related to the secretary of the school board , but they could teach just as well . And why , when a school board is insolvent and un- able to pay its bills , should it vote to pay $ 80 a month to a janitor for less than four hours work a day when plenty of other people could found to do it for $ 2.50 a day ? On wages alone the Mears school board could save the taxpayers $ 730 a year . Of course if a school district is lousy with money it is all right to spend it , but when a school district is in the red already does it make good sense to spend $ 730 needlessly ? And remember the school board spent $ 600 for transportation when the ninth and tenth grades had been taught in Mears for 40 years and no extra teacher was needed for them . And last summer the school board defied the petition of the voters for a special meeting to re - establish the ninth and tenth grades which the board discontinued . Add together this $ 600 and the other $ 730 and you have $ 1330 , almost the exact sum that the Mears school board claim they are short . And because they spent un- wisely why Should the taxpayers have to surrender the sacred constitu- tional protection of the 15 mill limitation and vote more and more mills to satisfy the school board's spending itch ? And I can remember when some of you who now throw your swenty caps up in the air and say " Hurrah boys , hurrah ! Let's spread out the mills ! " couldn't pay your tixes and they were advertised in the tax sale . Let us be thoughtful Let's not spend money like a drunken sailor . Property valuations all over the township were marked up this spring by the board of rectow . Where will you be when the depression comes and your financial balloon deflates in the recession ? What Mears needs is a school board that will

operate within its budgot . A housewife who counts her change before she goes into the grocery is far wiser than any group of public officials anywhere that is eager to spend the public's money like a drunken sailor . -Some of you folks with Old Age Assistance checks living in rented or crowded quarters here an ' there , why don't you get a son or daughter to stake you to a couple of hundred to make a down payment on a little place of your own , that you finish paying for like you are paying rent now . The Hanson - Osborn agency in Hart tells me about a cute 4 - room house , within 1½ miles of a progressive small town , on a branch of a wonderful river , with 2 % acres of fine garden land all bordered along one whole side with the river , and woods . You can fish to your heart's content , catching them too , breathe the good air of the countryside and enjoy the few years you still have left to enjoy in the ways you love . If you have a half dozen years left to you , you will have the home paid for as the price is cheap , and it's yours , and no one can say " don't spit here , don't spit there , there is mud on your shoes , " and what - not . Enjoy your old age owning your own . Sons and daughters , make your old people happy in their own way . They will love you so for it . adv . - This week there were enough Shauls at Silver Lake to make a Persian rug if you fasten them together with safety pins . The C. J. The nautical Bassetts finished their snails - The Bassetts finished their cottage parlor in real ship - shape . In Pastor Bauman's Golden Hut his daughter gets dinner for her husband , Bill Towner , and plays with little Wendy Kay . While the DeKoster children are catching snails Frank Brabbs should he catching crabs to make a rhyme . - If I could find a calling eard I think I'd call on Shirley Call at the little Barton cottage and see if Roy and Larry Carlson are little Swedes - Twenty - five years ago I used to play chess with Evelyn Whalley , and though I hadn't seen her for years I remembered her instantly when she came to the dunes , the other day .
