-The shade trees in front of the courthouse sidewalk have been butchered . Ed Wellman , the street commissioner , is rather inclined to tree - cutting anyway . When he was a boy in school maybe he never learned that poem about " Woodman , spare that tree . " Ed thinks the limbs interfere with the electric light wires , but why not put the electric light wires up the back street or in the alley back of the hotel or in a covered cable that could still get along with the trees ? The people of Hart village go along their sad main street and look reproachfully at the reverse improvements . Were they consulted ? Were they allowed to vote on the matter ? No , you bet they were not . They are not supposed to know what they want . If they had been allowed to vote they would have voted to keep the trees . And the people of Hart should not treat this matter too lightly and say , oh well , let it go . How do you know but what Ed Wellman will carry his axe up into the next block and butcher the giant elm in front of the bus depot and other shade trees on up the line and on other streets ? People of Hart , wake up before the trees that beautify your city are ruined . Maybe it's time you put a muzzle on Ed Wellman's axe . - Mrs . Walt Churchill was sunning her crocheted bed spread on the curtain stretcher . - When Caleb Davis broke the ground of his pioneer fields with a wooden beam horse plow and scared up the angleworms that roamed in the forest primeval , he little dreamed that lis fertile fields would some day become the tramping ground for the hoofbeats of the famous Silver Hills herd of Guernseys . If Caleb could come back now as an unseen spirit walking in the rustling leaves of the late October wind he would wonder where the old carriage house was that stood by the road . He would ninrvel how long the barn and how tall the silo hnd grown . He would note all the changes that progress had brought forth , computing the cost with his shrewd calculating sort of a way , and then when he saw Vic Pearson coming out of the barn with the milk pails he would say : " Vic , old boy , you can tell Paul Wiener he is doing a pretty good job keeping the old place up . I'm proud of him . " R. M. Wiedman , physician to machinery , heals leaking radiators , makes tractors purr . mowing machines mow , tedders ted , trailers trail . A year ago when there was some agitation to build an annex building back of the church for church suppers and rec- reation purposes for the young people , such as basket ball games and parties , there was considerable popular cooperation with the idea . Some of the better - minded members of the board still clung to the idea but others insisted that the money already raised and four thousand dollars more should be usel to scoop out the church cellar full sized and put in a two thousand fi , ve hundred dollar heating plant . In all of which hila- rious spending of what they didn't have they showed a close kinship in financial intelligence to the Hart school board , whom they adore . Now there are a lot of things wrong with this plan . In the first place the whole church building was originally built for less than $ 5,000 . In the second place it is large enough as it is for church purposes . Go to church any Sunday morning and see if you cannot find plenty of empty seats in the main room without any necessity for opening up the big rising doors and increasing the seating room tremendously . The pastor sends out a mimeographed broadcast and says that in Mears alone there are at least 40 un - churched children and there is no room for them . How strange it is then that Mr. McGinness was able to put on a contest and had over 100 attending Sunday school in the brick church on the corner . Where did the children sit then ? Did they climb into the bell tower or sit on the ridge of the high roof ? No , they all got in the church alright . There , was room for all . There is plenty of room for all the people who want to attend church in Mears . In the third place , the building is a brick ven- eer structure and digging out the present north wall and moving it to the far edge of the church will weaken the strength of the building , make the floor above less secure , and rattle bricks loose from the outer wall . It is ridiculously unnecessary and absurdly unadvisable . The fur- nace that now heats the church is adequate . A ten dollar electric fan could be installed to increase the smoke draft for a few minutes until the building was warmed up . The $ 815 already raised many months ago isadequate to do all the kalsomining necessary and install an outside basement entrance on the south side and still there would be plenty of money left out of the money on hand . The know - it - all members on fre board do not let the membership or the church or congregation vote on whether a new furnace should be had or not . They just go aliead them selves and order a $ 2.500 heating plant right away without the money to pay for it . They also let the job for excavating an addition to the bersement . Study the names on this committee and you will see that two of them are also know - it - all members on the Mears school board , who voted to kill the high school and send it to Hart on a wagon . And the third member is a bachelor know - it - all who hooted and hollered for the school board and lauded them for their action . Remember , this school board met and munnimonsly refused to let the people of Mears have a

special school meeting to vote on the high school . Even though 1 voters signed the petition , and only fivé were necessary , the Mears school board had a meeting and voted to ignore the petition . Yet the school laws of Michigan provide a $ 500 fine and imprisonment in the county jail for a refusal to call the special meeting . The people of Mears are not sumed to be intelligent enough to vote on what they want is the appur- ent opinion of the Mears school board . And when some of these same men sit on the church board they behave in the same manner and presume the people who go to the church are not intelligent enough to know what they want and should not have any vote . In an effort to raise the $ 5000 which these overlords have decided among themselves to spend before they get it , a mimeographed broadcast has been sent out , not only to all the unconsulted members of the church and congregation , but also to non - church people of the village . We are telling you all these things so that you need not feel that you have to fall for their propaganda . It's just like one Mears father was telling the school board : " Now that you have killed the high school and sent it to Hart you might as well load your little post office on a truck , and your church and your two stores . and send them all over to Hart . " So if the church committee , the same arrogant people who killed the Mears high school , come bellyaching to you for a donation to make up that needless $ 5,000 , just ask them why they don't throw the church on the school bus and take it over to Hart also . We have always believed in churches . We think the church is a good thing in the community , but we attend church and know there are plenty of empty seats in the Mears church and plenty of room for all who want to attend there , and this large outlay of money is unnecessary . If this community is going to raise any such money let them spend it on the school so the overlords won't have to kick our children out of school in Mears and send them to Hart . Mears needs a new school board badly . And when you consider that some of the same personnel now on the Mears school board are also expending their limited wisdom in managing the church affairs by a hilarious spending of what they haven't got , one is led to wonder if they don't need a new church committee too . We be- lieve in the government of the people , by the people and for the people .
