They had a party up at the Mears School Thursday ngiht and one of the girls brot a jug of cider . They had to drink it out of the jug . Arthur Corner sat down to drink it and tipped up the jug and it came out too fast . Harry Muir started to drink and Bob Levere jerked the jug away and it spilled on the floor . We wonder if they had a towel to wipe the mouth of the jug off every time some one drank out of it . Toward the last when there were just two or three there they made some paper cups to drink out of . And Florence Mitchell , she made one and it ran out on her dress . In order to get partners for sup- per the boys had to stay in the high room and the girls stayed in the hall . The girls stuck ! their hands in at the edge of the door half way and the boys had to take hold of them and who ever they got had to he partners . Arthur Corn- er got Julia Wright and they ate supper together . John Sloan got Gertrude Augur . Liberty Reid got Maybelle Mosher and she wouldn't eat with him and Donald Walker got Florence Christian and she wouldn't eat with him . The two girls sat together and hugged each other .
And the other day Mack Mckee of the telegraph line came back to the Verbeck Tavern in Pent- water . And the Wise giris whis- pered to each other out in the kitchen that Mack was in the office . And then when he came into the dining room Adelaide said : " Your breakfast is ready . And ' Billy ' cooked it for you too . " And Mack out of sincere and ad- dacious appreciation seized ' Billy ' Wise and impulsively kissed her on the forehead the way you would a child . And Adelaide fled fearing that her turn would come next .

Without much premeditation on previous contemplation Bur- niece DeLosh suddenly decided on a Friday morning to have a party on her departing sister Isabel that very night . So she telephoned around and got busy with the cake batter when she hung up the receiver . That night while the crowd intermingled on the lawn like the hum of bees on an August afternoon Isabel De- Losh took George Stier and went out and got into Earl Huffman's car and Isabel started the car . Then along came Earl Huffman and Toledo Burmeister and said : " The nerve of some people's chil- dren ! " And he took the switch key out and put it in his pocket .

Floela Pease has transferred her radiance from the apple parings of the Hart Canning Factory to the shimmering needles of the Hart Shirt factory . Wherever Floela is there is life . She takes it along with her .
It makes me think of Mary Hanks , who was polished up in the Hart Normal and turned loose to teach up in the Kelley district which is way off the map , way up in the pine stumps of Crystal townshop or God - knows - where . Mary is an effervescent child and retreshing to listen to . So I said to her : " So you are going way up there in the wilderness to teach school in a country which is , be- yond the limits of cividza on . " " No , " said Mary , " wherever i go I take civilization with me . "
So after that I had a new cud exalted respect for the altitude and resourcefulness of Mary's in- tellect . And I began to think of her as the picture of the milky way sweeping onward and leav- ing a great sky - swept path of cul- ture behind her .
And Mary Hanks looks like Ruth Gamble who lives in the falness of life on the knoll - crest across the road from the silent city in Hart . She lives in phys- ical beatitude and guided by the refined perceptions of her mother she uses her hands to keep the house beautiful and clean. The other night her brother Stanley came home from the football game at Ann Arbor and went up late to his bed to sleep away the fatigue of the long motor trip from the university city . It was the middle of the forenoon when Stanley opened his to the ripe white daylight and finding that Ruth had the house torn up and the painter had painted the stairs he descended from the up- per room by a ladder .
