In the Shelby high school Byron Paige raised his hand and signaled wildly but Miss Carrie Winborn did not seem to see him so Ollie Ensign essayed to help Byron out by attracting Carrie's attention , and he said in an undertone : " Hey , Carrie ! " Whereupon Miss Windstorm banished him from the class until he should repent and apologize openly which he did in the fullness of time .

The Shelby faculty were returning from their holly day vaca- tion and as they alighted on the time - worn cinder path at the Shel- by depot the regular delegation of the Ancient Order of the Meet- ers of the Evening Train stood on the platform and recognized the dear familiar acedemic faces and when Miss Blanche Bixler drop- ped off the Cannonball the boys on the platform said , " There's Blanche ! " And when Miss Winborn stepped down they said , " There's Carrie ! " And she turned and gave them a cross look . And then Mr. Cross alighted and little Reddy Showerman exclaimed : " And where did he come from ? " And I suppose he turned in amazement and gave them a Cross look . It seems Miss Winborn's home is in Virginia and when she went into the postoffice there was a bunch of little fellows singing : " Carry me back to old Vir- giny ! " And I heard she bawled them out .

Sometimes when I am inclined to be too lenient and too sym- pathetic with the Shelby teachers I think of Margaret Duncan and her matter of fact ways and the prosy promptness with which she would tell me , " Sure , soak - it - to - ' em . " And then when I think of Margaret I feel like a motorist who has doubted and inquired if he was on the right road and been assured that he was . And so I go ahead and soak - it - to - ' em . So I am very grateful to Margaret just this minute even though she is hundreds of miles away , way up in Ashland with her father .

Before Christmas I heard that Milo Reynolds had bought A. W. Morris's Corner Grocery in Hart and would take possession on New Year's day . But the other day I was delighted to find that the deal had fallen through , like ashes through a sieve and Nida Mor- ris's father is going to stick to the Corner Store even as he did before for seven years or more .

The Frank Smith family live in Jack Quay's old house on the Brooker plantation and do everything that Jack Quay did in his faithful by - gone days of toil . And their little Cedric Smith got some carpenter tools for Christmas , but he hasn't built anything yet . Maybe they didn't give him any nails . And what good is a tack hammer unless you've got some nails and spikes to drive into the kitchen floor ?

The other day Lillian Woodford of Pentwater wanted to go to Hart on the train and the brakeman , Oliver Holder said if she wanted to go to Hart he would pay her fare on the train . So she went and the conductor came around to get her fare and she said : " I haven't got any money and she kind of looked back to where the brakeman was . But he looked innocently and " nothing doing . " So while they were arguing about the fare , Lillian and the conductor , Margery Sands who was sitting across the aisle dug down in her pocket and paid Lillian's fare .

The Brooker girls , Alithea and Norma , spent one wonderful day this vacation in Muskegon with their mother , lamping the yelling yards of merchandise and feeling of gauze and crepe de chine . They had lots of things to tell Olive Schultz on their return .

O. M. Wright , the foremost citizen and booster of Mears has the sympathy of the whole county in his sudden beareavement .

Lester Peacock left the Aerts girls , Barbara and Josephine in the car by the roadside New Years night while he walked a half a mile for gas .

This is the way he happened to go out with them . The Aerts girls were out with Leroy Kokx Friday nite and he agreed to take them to the Pentwater masquerade Sat - urday night . But they said : " You wont need to take us up to Pentwater . We will go up on the train . And then you can bring us home . " LeRoy Kokx said to himself : " Here's where I fool those Aerts girls . What's the use of taking girls to the dance when you have to coax them to dance with you after you get them there . Most likely they have a date with some one to meet them at the train and all they want me for is to lug them home in my car . I will fool them . I will not go . " And that is how Lester Peacock , an old time friend of the family had to bring the Aerts girls home .

On Thanksgiving Day Ruth Scheiren and Joe Wolf eloped from Hart to Muskegon on the train together . I wonder if they did it on New Years ?

The Slate family should name their marble - colored Persian cat Fluffy . They got it when it followed Mrs. Westbrook home from he fair . The ravenous McCormicks chop two cords of appe- tite every morning and come home ravenous to eat the hot bis- cuits . Guy Hook's pigs and cows had a surprise party in Dot Mc Cormick's yard and scared Dot wntil she was dotty .

At the Hart Athletic Club they have wrestling mats , indoor baseball , flying rings and everything . Irving Near is Athletic Director .

Do you know Dorothy Maxson the life insurance agent . She lives near the Hart cemetery and helps you to look beyond . She represents the Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Iowa .

Mr. Jake Buck in Pentwater has sold the store building on the Hancock street corner of his block to George Suttler for $ 800 . And George will revise the building in the spring or else build a new one . And the location may be used as a garage . And if they move the Lake Shore garage up there can they call it the Lake Shore Garage still ? Yes my child even as they moved the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co. to lonia and the Muskegon Knitting Mills to Pent- water . What's in a name ?

Leo Brunk is manager of the Muskegon Knitting Mills branch in Pentwater . And Hazel Kneen and Maggie Tickner are knitting machine operatives . So they are knitting socks for the people of Pentwater and we hope the girls will sock it to them .

J. L. Congdon and Vic Wiedensee are starting a Vaudette in Pentwater . It will be in the auditorium and will open next week .
