A Question on a Thousand Tongues :
" Swift , why is it our paper comes so late ? "
In the Mears News office there is a very tense time - situation . Our light burns far into the night , way past midnight , often past 3 a . m . It seems there are scarcely enough hours in a week to get the work done . You know it takes money to run a newspaper . And if we go out on the roads to get it there is always a lot of money forthcoming from our hun- dreds of loyal subscribers . But this takes up so much time that the work in our office gets behind and the paper is late . If we could only have more time in the office we could set up more type and get more news in the paper and make the paper much more interesting . Would you like to relieve this tense time - shortage situation ? Stop and think : Do you owe Swift Lathers 50 cents ? If you do will you not sit down and send the 50c to him in a letter ? Then next week he can stay in his office longer and get the paper out earlier : and so much the sooner over the camp of the Mears News will spread unclouded -the blue sky !

Like the church in Mears
I have always taken a passing pleasure when I walked by the church at South Hart . Snug and sacred it stands there by the country crossroads , an object of veneration austerely it stands there by the roadside like a monument to the to the wayfarer , faith of our fathers , so full of empty shadows and possibilities . I don't know how it is with you but I love the church in the open country , a church where the congregation can sit and look out of the windows at the tiger lilies in the meadow and at the fields of waving grain so that the parables of the Great Teacher lie like an open book before their eyes . To ride to such a country church in an open surrey on a summer sabbath afternoon and watch the lazy moving horses shake the flies off their harness net as I listened to the drone of the whiffletree going back and forth back on the good old earth roads of my boyhood , oh it would be worth a thou- sand dollars to live again in that pastoral sweet simplicity . So here you have the church in the open country set down on the cross- roads at South Hart . A waiting there cheerless and empty among the Methodists and Baptists and Brethren and Disciples and Luthe- rans and Presbyterians , stands this church of possibilities waiting for some great wide - minded , wide - hearted community leader like Rev. Cilley to come and put his arms around it , and make of it the community church . Sometimes for a little while there are meetings in the church , sometimes there is Union Sunday school in the little schoolhouse down the road . But the church is the place . Don't let it stay closed and musty . Up at Smith's Corners the people are trying to build a church , carrying bricks and stones a long way , and when the wind blows down the rafters they have patience and build it up again . But your church is already built and waiting . I know you people of South Hart . I have been in your kitchens . I have learned to watch for your lamplights when I am walking in the hills . So when I remember our community church in Mears with its stained glass windows set in the brick walls I think of your little brick church on the crossroads and I wish that you could get together like we do for our monthly community supper on a Tues- day evening , all of you , the Wyns and Putneys and Pratts , the Wilburs and Schramms and Morats , the Thurstons and Posts and Macks , the Nielsens and Mietners and Metts , the Lelands and Ireys and Hulberts , everybody , to have a big picnic in the church once a month to listen to Dell Putney play the fiddle and Ann McCann speak a piece and Ann Winship and Margaret Wilbur sing a solo and hear a little address by Rev. White on the community church and maybe an address by Mr. Pickford the county agent or an ora- tion by Earl Pugsley . At such an informal gathering you might accidentally get acquainted with your neighbor . And then on Sun- day mornings or Sunday afteroons you would go to the church service with a more human and socialized vision of everything and

everybody within the brick walls . And Mrs. Mietner would sing a solo " Sweeter as the years go by , " and Paul Nielsen the inspired violinist would vitalize the hymn books . And so united in fellow- ship you would breathe together and when you came to the closing hymn you would put such a power into singing " There's a church in the valley in the wildwood , no lovlier pot in the dale . " And all the next week in the plow furrows , the kitchens , the well - curb at school recess the memory of a wholesome goodness will linger around you as you took it home from church in the open country .
