Homecoming Handshakes

-Charlie Noret went out of business because his cookbook was getting tired , and now Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith are running the cafe.- -A crowd of friends gathered Saturday night to help Ole Pearson cele- brate his birthday and swarmed into the farmhouse parlor where a big framed picture of Ole at 23 hung on the wall . He is more than three times that old now and has raised eleven fine children who are a credit to their parents and easy on the looking glass . After a while Edwin in his navy uniform arrived with Ruth , Alice and Florence . - It rained and Sam Krantz's car got wet in the gizzard , but Clifford Bjorklund pushed it up hill and down the road home . - There is no substitute for tree- ripened fresh fruit . Go to Esslinger's fresh fruit market on Oceana's busiest corner , US - 31 and MS2 , for the cream of the erop in all varie- ties of fruit . adv . - Adrian Theeuwes , who used to currycomb the Hol- stein cows and Duroc Jersey hogs at the county fair , isn't slapping the 1120 pound hogs on the back this September as he is in the army on the west coast . He says our beaches are better . - Mrs . Berta Ruick's Samo- yede dog , Novik of Snowlands , has been attending school at the In- dianapolis Obedience training class but is now enjoying a vacation Pentwater eating the carrot soup that John , the porter , feeds him un- til Novik feels 18 carrots fine.-A. R. Fors arrives from Dayton so his wife , who used to be Miss Pearce , can season her breakfast with the Lake Michigan air in Pentwater . Jeanne Pearce pulls in from Pacific coast Glendale with a fresh degree from the University of Southern California . C. E. Sullivan comes also with a strong boxing name . He lives on Steel avenue in Detroit and will visit Mr. Fors , so this will make a strong combination . - You can have five acres of land with your summer cottage , only a mile from our beautiful Silver Lake . And the cottage is just a darling , with roses climbing around the door , substan- tial and good , built by that master builder Perl Farmer , at a cost dou- ble what is asked for the property . Eva at Hart , you know , that vete- ran real estate woman that sells and buys like the lightning flashes , has this for sale . Don't think it will take a thousand even to get it : easy terms , too . Go see Eva , across from the court house , and own it yourself before the sun sets over the lake , adv . - The Vroom cold stor- age place on US - 31 at MS2 is a mammoth frosty palace to keep apples fresh . I looked into a cold room that was 80x120 , and Mr. Seri , sema

said there was another such room on the other side . In this room is a furnace that sends out shivers instead of heat . In front is a packing house 60x60 with an office in the balcony . - Howard Matteson and Dal- las Cox drove from Detroit to Manistee and stopped off to see the sands of Silver Lake . - That grand old Hitchcock place just south of MS2 as you go east from Hart , you know , the big white house with the grand old trees all around and in the background , yes , after all these years it has a new owner , a mother , an grandmother , and some children who will have bridle paths from one end of the 80 to the other where they will ride the old nags they hope to have . The Hanson - Os- born agency at Hart found the buyer after Mrs. Hitchcock , the pioneer owner ( with her late husband ) recently died . All the old tools neatly stored and in good repair , went with the place . - John Lovell doesn't need to go to the movies since Mrs. Haynes lives across the street . The other day Mrs. Haynes found a tin can under her apple tree in the old Woodhouse yard where the wood house burned down , and she fired it over into Frank Downing's corn field and followed it with another and another . Frank aims to raise ear corn in his field and not canned corn . so the cans didn't make him feel very good on Sunday morning . And when Mrs. Haynes began talking about rats , her favorite name for any Mears people who are out of grace in her eyes , Frank pricked up his ears a little and ran his hand around his collar to wipe the sweat off . And then when Mrs. Haynes put the bottle in the tire track where it might crack up under traffic and perforate his hard - to - get tires , he con- sidered it was time for a sermon and for action . He crossed over to deliver the sermon under the apple tree , starting out : " What's this all about rats ? " And he made her pick up the bottle out of the tire track , for which we are much obliged to Frank , for we don't want to punc- ture our rubber heels and baby cab tires on any of Mrs. Haynes ' bottle necks , by heck . - Want a castle ? A nice big old house on a few acres : pretty 50 - year - old trees all around , out Walkerville road . Only $ 2250 , cash or time . See Hanson - Osborn at Hart , across from court house , adv . Mrs. Clara Hitchcock was buried Monday . She had lived in Mears many years . Born in New York in 1862 , she married George Hitchcock Muskegon in 1890. He preceded her 12 years ago . She leaves a son , Grant , and two daughters , Mrs. John Lovell and Mrs. Oscar Pearson . Merle Hitchcock is a step - son . - On Wednesday evening , August 12 , from 11 p . m . for half an hour Oceana and a lot of other Michigan counties get a test blackont . Be sure your light is out by 11 and that you keep things dark for half an hour . If you pull your electric light switch the buttons will take care of themselves . - Well , it begins to look like the soil district gravy train is licked for the time being . The soil committeemen who ride on the gravy train with Bill Wenk for en- gineer and Tommy Tompkins for conductor and Henry Henrickson and Ted Rouse for pop corn boys , were tooting up the locomotive to put all the farm lands of Oceana in bondage so they could have a swell time riding the gravy train and seeing the corn fields go by . But they didn't make such a whooping success of it is they expected . In fact , they saw the handwriting on the wall and they got the soil election called off be- fore the lop - sided train went around the curve and plunged into the Missouri river . The rising tide of Oceana was getting ready to go to the polls on August 25 and swamp the soil conservation district monkey business once and for all . But when Bill Wenk and Tommy Tompkins and the pop corn boys saw the old gravy train steering straight for the whirlpool rapids they were glad to call off the election . " Indefinitely postponed " or " deferred to a later date " they call it . But you got to watch them like a cat . The wily boys on the gravy train are hoping to

do some whispering work this summer as they trot around with their portfolios telling the real dirt farmers how to farm while their own corn grows up to weeds . So watch them , brother , watch them ; watch the pussyfoot gravy boys when they come around on their whispering campaign . We were ready for them , anxious to wallop them at their own election they called themselves . But the boys on the gravy train saw the handwriting on the wall and called off their own election . So watch ' em , brother , watch ' em . Keep your ear to the ground for the gravy train crew or when the " pop corn boys " come around . Indepen- dent agriculture is saved again in Oceana county . Our farmers free men yet and our fields are free from the iron whip . - For - good- farms and village homes see E. L. Bunting , Walkerville - Mears boy scouts camped this week on Riley's door yard at Silver Lake - If it is against the law for a Michigan judge to run for any office other than the bench during his term or for one year thereafter , then let the judge abide by it . We believe that Judge Homer Ferguson of Detroit is entitled to run for United States senator . As a judge he ought to con- not form to the law and be above question , a righteous example to us all- Mr. and Mis . Sid Simpson of Detroit have iccated at Smiths Corners on the old J. L. Smith farm . This usel to be one of the finest fruit farms in the county ; remember when Jay was treasurer and he used to have barrels of rosy apples in the court house ? Well , the Simpsons have a rosy - cheeked daughter who isn't there yet , but will be later , perhaps . She works in an affice or bank in Detroit . Mrs. Simpson is a beauty of- erator , one of the best , I'd assume , by looking at her , a tall , handsome woman . Sidney is good looking , too , and a steam fitter by trade who may be called to Ludington to sell his services for big money . Anyway , we welcome the Simpsons to Smiths Corners and Oceana county . - Dr . and Mrs. Roland Felt from Virginia were up here to see their daughter . Mrs. G. E. Bentley , of North Juniper , and they felt of all the doorknobs in the new house . When they departed for Illinois they took along a quart of maple syrup and a quart of huckleberries - Yesterday in the rain Donald Thaler was playing his saxaflute upside down so the rain would not get into the little holes and drown the flats and sharps- George Lipps says he used to be able to run up hill , but since he got bis false teeth he has to roll down . - Hurry hurry ! hurry ! Only two more sets of tires left with cars on them . We don't have to talk about our car work . Its high quality speaks for itself . Complete motor tuning equipment . Steen's Super Service , the home of Nu Blue Sunoco in Hait . Western and native beef , spring chickens , lamb , bacon , bam , home- made sausage . We especially welcome resort trade .
