Leaping Lettuce Leaves

Who should appear in the sand dunes but my old friend , Bill Salter . now grown to adult stature and wisdom and accompanied by a con- genial little wife named Aili , who is a Finn from the copper country ! When she starts on a hike she sees it through to the Finnish . They are renting one of the Ensing cottages for a week . Bill Salter has such a salty name that the Ensings drove a new well for him to get strictly fresh water for the " old salt . " If Bill looked in the first cupful and found any sand he would say : " Iley ( Aiii ) this water is riley . " - -Shelby high school has let the youngsters loose to go to Stony Lake for a house party . In one of the Burmeister cottages are a bunch of sophomores , and a ladder was up at the window , doubtless left there by Mr. Burmeister when he was fixing the cottage . The Jensen , Byron Paige , Royal , Butler and Wyns cottages are also full of Shelby high school students , and at one of these cottages another ladder was up to fix a screen or something , but someone told the boys and girls they must be playing Romeo and Juliet already yet . - Hart Odd Fellows will . nominate officers May 28 and hope to have movies June 4 - Everett Graff lost his dog Sandy and doesn't know where to find him - Thelma Celine Lathers on Friday completed 12 years of school attendance . through the kindergarten and 11 grades , without being absent a day . Billo Lathers completed 10 years with the same record . Forest coin- pleted six perf ct years and Nathan Quick , aged 7. finished his two years of perfect attendance . - Mrs . Fred Pringle , a long - time resident of Hart , passed away . She leaves her husband and a son , Merrill , who runs an insurance business in Muskegon . - W . W. Erdman's new house on Babbitt hill on the old tarvia road south of the Hart water tower has a large window with a sightly view . Here Doc can sit and see a great range of hills , also Lake Michigan with the steamer City of Mid- land pulling toward Ludington harbor . - The A. J. Bakers have a pleasant door yard and they take great springtime delight tinkering around among their flowering shrubs . Where T. J. Collins used to tink- er in his carpenter shop , Mr. Baker now finds delight in making things . The Sanitary Meat Market on the east side of Shelby's main street wants to buy poultry , hogs , livestock ; also feeder cattle and mileh cows ,

MYERS SPRAY OUTFIT for sale , with power takeoff . Mrs. George Reid , Mears . - Here it is Decoration Day time again and soon Rev. A. A. Bauman may be coming up from Joliet to jolly the folks around the campfire in the park . He is a good leader and introducer and program manager . High water and wind continues to make inroads on the lake frontage at Juniper Beach . Before the Armistice Day storm in 1941 there was a width of 129 feet of beach from the end of Harry Win- ship's front - extending sidewalk to the lake . Then they took up 60 feet to save it . The lake has now come in over 200 feet altogether since that November 11 , 1941 - Keith Corliss bought a farm . His wife it seems owns a house Muskegon but they spend part of their time at his house at Silver Lake . George Crist , the new assistant , often takes the Silver Hills milk to Hart so Floyd Krauter can keep the big tractor snorting . George hopes his wife will make pumpkin pies while he is gone , I don't know what kind of pies Floyd wants his wife to make the oftenest , but daughter Jeanine likes mud pies best . - I went to Grand Haven Wednesday morning to see how the soil district business expense account mounts up down there . I guess I was underestimating things when I approximated the cost at $ 10,000 a year . Down in the West Ottawa district , which is ,

I presume , half a county , there are 11 on the pay rolls . They have a conservationist getting no doubt about $ 3,600 a year or more , also an assistant conservationist or forester , also two engineering aides and a full - time office girl , also five part - time employees . The expense down there for half a county may run up $ 15,000 a year , easily , we surmise , for overhead . What would it be in Oceana county with 16 townships ? I went around the farms some and there were lots of Christmas trees planted by the farmers themselves . But anybody can plant Christmas trees . You don't have to have any patent or concession to do that . The school children in Oceana county plant thousands of them and we don't have any $ 15,000 a year soil personnell to tell us to do it either . What do we have county agricultural agents for if not to furnish us with ad- vice and suggestions about farm betterment ? We could see nothing being done in Ottawa county that our own county agent could not do for us . Any 15 - year - old boy can plant pine trees , hundreds of them , in a day . Even the kindergarten children can dig a little hole in the ground , put in a tree and press the moist soil back in place . Some of these government " soil technicians " overestimate their necessity . They act as if agriculture would immediately fall to pieces if they were not kept around to the cluster tune of $ 15.000 a year . This is no time for civilian extravagance . Our nation is urging us to retrench on expendi- tures , to save every dime and every dollar we can spare for war bonds . Such an extravagance in Oceana county is unnecessary and unright- eous . And tied up in the statute it operates under is a system of com- pulsion and penalties , of fines and jail sentences , if you fail to form with any land use regulations and soil practices which might be adopted . Engineering operations on your farm might be required of you , performed against your protest , the expense of which can be as- sessed against your farm without limit , perhaps in hundreds of dollars , and because of which you could lose your farm for taxes . You ought to know the stern provisions of this soil district statute , which can make the independent American farmer no longer independent , but only a wire - operated Charlie McCarty who must do as he is told to do and jump to the music . Vote NO at the soil election June 26. And if you have time voice your protest at the open meeting Wednesday evening , June 2 , at the Hart high school gymnasium . We can plant Christmas trees , thousands of them , without being tied up to that parasite bunch . Roy L. Geisinger , cor . Pine & 6th St .. Shelby , repairs watches . Let im keep your watch ticking for the duration .
