Keith Corliss , the grocer , has shaken the winter dust off his wheel- barrow and is now building a cement patch in his front sidewalk which has been worn out by the tramp of many feet coming in with burdens of copper and silver and going out with Farmerest pies , cakes , beans , celery and daily papers . If you are a landowner in Oceana county outside of the incorporated villages , you have reason to be alarmed over the menace of the pro- posed soils eonservation district which a bunch of parasites are seek- ing to organize . A year ago I attended a feel - out meeting in Shelby high school auditorium and the bland secretary of agriculture told the 100 people : " Now this is your meeting . It's entirely up to you . We are not trying to force anything onto you that you don't want . If the pre- ponderance of sentiment at this meeting seems to be in favor of a dis- trict we may call an election . If not the matter is dropped . " Or words to that effect . Over and over he reiterated the statement . A straw yote was taken , and of course we knew that the 45 Triple - A stool pigeons would be there to whoop - er - up and stand up like automatons when their boss cracked the whip . These stooges get paid for going around and palavering with one foot on the fence while they hold up the time of the honest - to - goodness farmer who is tilling the soil . And of course we expected Mr. Wink to pop out of his swivel chair and make his ap- pearance . And Mr. Rouse would make his bow to the house . And there would be a Triple A clerk or two who would wedge in . So they took a straw vote and it was 49 to 49 , mind you , 49 independent , indignant farmers and landowners who came there out of principle to counter- balance the whoopee bunch from the gravy train . Now , as anybody knows , when a motion receives a vote of 49 to 49 it is lost . There was no majority , no preponderance that would give the secretary of agri- culture any ground to stand on for calling a soil district election . Yet , in spite of his promise , he went and did it . Indignation arose among the rank and file of Oceana county , such indignation that the secretary of agriculture's bunch were glad to call the election off . Then quietly and pussy - footing the stool pigeons were set to work whispering around here and there all winter until they had the brass to call another elec- tion . At public expense they have been waging a campaign to choke this soil district business down our throats whether we want it or not . We fight wars to keep our freedom , and yet here right in the midst of a war when we are fighting to maintain our freedom , these parasites of agriculture try to edge in to take away our freedom , to control our fields and to launch a set - up that would spend $ 10,000 a year of tax- payer's money besides all the grief and expense it would cost private individuals . And all this in a year when we are urged to save every dollar , every dime we can spare for war bonds and stamps to help win the war . Many of these agitating parasites do not own a farm and many a Triple - A man would rather be out on the road telling the other fel- low how to farm when they are failures themselves , Vote NO June 29 ,

great white barn at Silver Hills Farm . The main rectangle is 50x - 40 feet , but with the side rooms the barn has more than 6000 square feet of floor space on the ground floor alone . Connected with it is a silo 12 feet in diameter and 40 feet high . Nearby is a dairy building 36x24 feet . There is a bull pen 48x18 feet and a tool house 80x20 feet . There are 340 acres in all in the Wiener farms in Golden township . Starting in July , 1939 , Paul Wiener had four cows the first year . In 1940 he had 22 and there are now 61 head of cattle in the herd . By sales of calves here and there in Oceana and adjoining counties . Mr. Wiener has improved many herds by the offspring from his famous herd of reg- istered Guernseys , and he has also greatly increased the fertility of his farm with an abundant supply of barnyard fertilizer . Many a farm in Oceana county would be vastly more productive if its owner would follow Mr. Wiener's example of building up a herd of dairy cows . Too many fruit farmers are trying to raise fruit without the help of a herd of cattle to keep up the fertility of the soil . A few dairy cows would not only provide a constant revenue all the year round , but the fertility of the farms would be greatly enhanced . Mr. Wiener is fortunate in having for his manager , Mr. Floyd Krauter , a very capable farm en- gineer , who came here from one of the best dairy farms in Indiana . When you pass by the great white barn at Silver Hills , consider the dairy cow and the value you could add to the fertility of your fields if you added a few dairy cows to your farm equipment for more profit .
