Mrs. Bert McClennan took her two alarm clocks to the jeweler's to get cleaned and reconditioned so she would know when it is time to go to bed at night . - Ray Feasel came up from camp to visit his wife , June , in the month of June . - Betty Jean Hopkins comes from New York City to spend the summer in Hart . - Murray Rossiter goes to the army and so Ma Foster threw a big dinner Sunday before he went . Mugaret Hansen's arm is healed so she can whip up a salad for the Bunco club . - The defenders of liberty esteem the soil district election a tremendous success because the proposition to form a soil district was defeated by a rousing majority of 10 to 1. The vote in the county was 1626 against and only 159 votes in favor of it . In the Ferry - Otto poll there were 140 votes against and only three in favor of it . What promi- nent gravy train official lives over that way ? He and his wife found one person in the two townships who thought the same as they did . So there were three votes , making an opposing ratio of 46 to 1. This was a splendid showing for the cause of freedom . In Elbridge township the ratio was 20 to 1. In every township in the county the measure was snowed under . Listen to the tunes of freedom in the several townships : Benona , 150 no to 20 yes ; Grant , 74 to 12 : Claybanks . 86 to 18 ; New- field , 131 to 5 : Shelby , 222 to 29 ; Hart . 173 to 15 ; Crystal , 76 to 9 : Weare - Pentwater , 141 to 10 ; Leavitt - Colfax , 130 to 10 ; Golden , 160 to 21 : Elbridge , 143 to 7 ; Ferry - Otto , 140 to 3. The landowners of Oceana county turned out in no uncertain mind to let the boys in Lansing know what they didn't want . The result was most gratifying and a glorious victory for the independent spirit of the Oceana farmers . We want no stool pigeon dictators sitting on our fences telling us how we got to plow and what we dare to plant . It was a long campaign of over

a year . The soil election advertised for last year was suddenly stopped because its promoters came to realize that they were utterly licked if the election went on . All winter the stool pigeons conducted their whispering educational campaign until this summer when they thought they could put it across , but they couldn't . Freedom triumphed in Oce- ana . And in some other counties where the districts were quietly- stealthily put over on the unsuspecting public , it was because the rank and file of the farmers didn't know what was in the statute or they would have risen in wrath . In one county there were only 136 affirma- tive votes and 20 against it . The gravy train alone could muster up 136 votes , with the aid of their wives and children and the triple - X central office force . When you consider that in Golden township alone there were 160 votes against it , and this is more than the entire vote in the county referred to , you will be well aware that the people over there didn't take a tumble to what was being pulled off in their county or they would have risen in wrath and snowed it under . The people of Oceana county were informed and they went to the election with uncertain step to vote a rousing NO . Hurrah for Oceana county , where the spirit of freedom still lives and free men fill the soil as they see fit . Grace White is trimming her rose arbor over her cottage door . " Nonie " likes nursing and the patients like " Nonie's " nursing . - Oue time when Lynn Sloan was quite a lot younger , his folks went to Shelby one night and dropied him off at Charlie Heer's camp at Crystal Lake along with Betty and Virginia Cooper from New Lennox , Illinois . Lively as they are , it was quite surprising for them to be sitting quietly and soberly on a bench when the Sloans came back to get them . It seems the young folks were running down hill in the dark and tumbled right over the fence into the big bear's yard . " Why , you here ? Here come John and Stephen Meloy to summer by the big lake in Pentwater . - Robert Lorenz came home to Hart on a furlough from San Diego and breezed into his moth- er's magazine store in such eager anxious haste to be home that the front pages of the periodicals turned over in windy astonishment- Paul Wiener has purchased the Lucy Hunter farm on the corner by the musical creek and added it to his pasture land on his farm No. 3 . -Miss Miriam Wilson has opened her girls ' camp called Glenloch up the Lake Michigan shore toward Bass Lake . In Garrison Park dwells Rosanne Ayer , and whatever days are red letter days on her calendar she can mark them with vermillion crayon in Ayer's almanne .
