Backsliding Clocks

are ripe around the Land of Mears

Page 2

There was no school in the half - baked Willson schoolhouse last Tuesday because Jim Farmer was putting in the new furnace and the copybooks cuuld not hear themselves think . They were going to have Sunday school in the new Willson schoolhouse Sunday but Clint Knapp would n't let thei .

Bert Post Pays it isn't the Willson schoolhouse any more because the site is changed and the Willson farm is sold . And if he hears any one speak of it as the Willson schoolhouse again he will walk up and slap his face .

We would suggest that it be called the Knapp school in honor of the prime minister . Because he hath kept the schoolhouse from being desecrated .

Dear Swift : The other day they had silo fillers at Ed Lindgren's out here in West Golden . Now you know I carry my arm in a sling because I broke it awhile ago while I was cranking a ford . So they put me in the silo with John Edlund to tramp down the silage . Ed paid the fellows fifty cents an hour but he paid me $ 2.50 for ten hours because my arm was out of whack . Now I leave it to you if I couldn't tramp down as much silage as any man with two good arms ? Harold Van Tassel

Tut ! tut ! child , you are expected to fall down every few min- utes on your knees and spat the silage with your hands . You are most unreasonable in your demands . Now if you had two arms broke you would have to tramp silage for nothing . And if you had one ear missing you would have to pay $ 1.25 a day to be in the silo !

Frances Miller of CrystalValley works in the salt brine room at the Hart Can way uphigh in the attic . One day when shehad a caller Walt Bushaw took a ladder and climbed up from the kitchen and listened ata knothole . What he heard , he kept to himself and it wouldhave been alright if Ory Ritten- house and Cecil Prosser hadn'tsquealed on him . - Miss Lattin lost her false tooth and blamed it on - to Floela Pease and Mae Rep- logle .

And so Bernice Hasty has aharem skirt has she ? Hank Roovers spent so much money onthe purchase of his ford that he hasn't enough left to buy sup - plies and attachments and food for his car and to keep its cir - cular feet decently shod .

Considerable commotion has been aroused in New Era and its virons this week by the report of repeated attempts , by shooting , up- on the life of Arthur Vannett , 20 years old , son of Ralph Vannett .

at-

The first attempt , it is stated , was made by shooting through a win- dow near which Vannett sat read- ing by lamp light - the window be ing open . Second and third tempts were made on following nights , although the assailed young man in each case is reported to have returned the fire with revolver or gun , the assailant seems to have es- caped without injury , nor has any trace of a gunman been discovered by the State Police , local officers and citizens .

At one time it was stated that some unidentified person or animal had been chased into a nearby swamp , but nothing more definite has developed .

There is a general feeling that the affair presents the appearance of a practical joke or the outpourings of

a fervid imagination .
