who used to be Alice Almquist , the lighthouse keeper's daughter.- After the new administration down in Lansing tried to perpetrate the plan taking the office of state highway commissioner from the ballots of the people and got licked , they deviled out a bill to have the county highway commissions take over the state highway maintenance if the counties asked for it . If this bill becomes a law it might make 83 dif- ferent standards of state highway maintenance and the counties would be under no responsibility or penalty for poor work . Just think of it , here in Oceana county the county highway commissioners had to go and get the state maintenance department to come and plow out the county roads the last part of this winter . The county was unable to take care of the county roads to say nothing of the state roads . " Hay- ing failed in their recent efforts to take the highway department out of the hands of the people , Republican sponsors of this Bill now intend to achieve their petty partisan purposes indirectly , by dividing the highway department into 83 county units . The responsibility and power to halt this move to wreck our state highway system is in your hands , Governor . The people of Michigan expect you to repudiate the politi- cians who put patronage grabbing above war requirements and proven performance , " says Lloyd B. Reid , State Highway Commissioner.- This winter Mrs. O. C. Van Syoe did not have to climb her New Era hil so much as she stayed with Mrs. Laura Sargent in Shelby- There may be a few new faces on the board of supervisors this year . It seems in some of the townships the constituents were so disgusted with t eir supervisor whitewashing the road commission and one thing or another that the people decided to get some new material in office . Some of these supervisors were defeated in caucuses and some S the hand writing on the wall and knew better than to run . In Crystal township Will Wever is running . He used to be in the bank up there and seems like a fine fellow . - Plant a Victory garden . As Roger Allen says : " We eat a lot from this little spot and what we can't eat we can . " It is getting about time the board of supervisors let the people eleet the county highway commissioners . They could select just as good commissioners and maybe some better . Let the people have a voice Miss Alberta Royal has completed her preliminary training as a WAVE and received her commission as ensign in the navy .
