Why not let the people elect the county highway commissioners ? They couldn't do any worse . It is the people's right . We are the people . Why can't we choose who is going to manage our county highways and spend thousands of dollars wisely or otherwise . Mrs. Beulah Davis . who spent the winter at Evansville , Indiana , is now back again at her home on State street in Hart . Tommy Osborn is out in Utah looking at the grassless desert and seeing Salt Lake City in the distance . - A printed news letter is being distributed to the Oceana county boys in the service by the Oceana War League . It is called the Oceana News Letter . Oscar Worth says he leaned over to pick up a board and got a crick in his back , which was expensive . Now would you call that board bill ? Next time you see a board , Oscar , let it alone and use it for a sidewalk . - Benton Gebhart , one of our grand old pioneers passed away in Florida this week at the age of 83. When the lumber mills were going , Benton . as a boy , was in the fruit business even then . He took blackberries and muskmelons to the East Golden mills on a wheel- barrow through the forest and sold them to the mill hands to eat at noontime while they threw melon seeds into each other's faces . And when the timber was gone Benton set out thousands of fruit trees for himself and his neighbors . He hauled thousands of bushels of peaches up the old now almost abandoned road north of Joe Kynel's and put the peaches on the boat at Pentwater . His door yard on the quiet old tar- via road south of the Hart water tower was a wealth of shrubbery and flowers . I wonder if the old surrey he used to drive to church still stands in the old barn across the lawn . A tall upright man with a kindly , benevolent friendly face , Benton Gebhart was a pillar of right- e.usness in his community . Winters these late years he would go to Florida to bask in the sunshine and play shuffleboard with men in life's afternoon . In July he would be sitting back in a tilted ebair at his Ited Band fruit stand up grist mill hill north of Hart waiting to sell quart boxes of big black sweets to tourists who spit the cherry pits ont all along US - 31 . And there at the little stand was a shelf of glasses of currant jelly his wife made . When a car stopped Benton would wake

up from a little nap and set the chair legs down and tell the tourist about his big black sweets and his Rochesters and his raspberry jam . And all his fruits and all his sales were flavored with his wholesome and generous philosophy and the mellow hopefulness with which he piloted the wheelbarrow through the twilight woods to sell blackber- ries and muskmelons at the East Golden saw mills when he was a boy . -Stanley Lee is candidate for supervisor of Golden township on the Democratic ticket . Give him a hand at the township election Monday . ( political advertisement . ) - Seeing how agriculture is short - handed this year and we need to grow all we can and produce food for victory , for the home front and for our allies , wouldn't it be a good idea if Bill Wenk and all his relation and non - relation would get up out of their swivel chairs where they sit and whirl their thumbs to regulate by re- mote control the plow furrows and cultivator teeth of their industrious neighbors , and go out into the dirt fields themselves at the business end of a hoe handle ? Too many white collar folks sitting in the swivel chairs when they ought to be behind a cultivator . Too many committee- men sitting on your fence and watching you spade when they ought to be home weeding the onion bed . Does agriculture pay ? If so , why don't they get off the fence and go home and get busy with the garden tools ? These committeemen would rather sit in their swivel chairs un- til hell freezes over , and if the real dirt farmers emulated their in- dustrious ( ? ) example there wouldn't be much food for victory . These parasites on agriculture are the barnacles on the ship of state , who don't give a toot for anybody as long as they can ride on the gravy 1.aia . A dozen years ago we could farm without these ambitionless parasites to tell us how . Why can't we now ? Have we forgotten all and the industry and agricultural wisdom taught us by our fathers grandfathers ? Here in Oceana county they produced trainloads of po- and tatoes , boatloads of fruit and elevators full of grain and beans they didn't need any AAA committeemen to sit on the rail fences and tell them which way to steer the plow handle . Food for victory ? Yes , we can grow lots of it , same as the pioneers , same as our fathers and grandfathers . But we need good old - fashioned down - to - earth farming and industry and ambition , and not some lazy committeemen , too lazy to farm , sitting on our garden fence to count each tomato seed we plant and how many kernels of corn we put in a hill . - Oceana's first pick - up of tin cans will come Wednesday , April 21. Wash the cans after you empty them . take out both ends , put inside can and step on it.- Ev's Radio Service is now open 5 p . m . to 6 p . m . Monday to Friday . Also 7 to 9 p . m .
