There are certain forces at work to choke this soil business down your necks , whether you want it or not , whether you like it or not . just because it will line their pocket books . Bill Wenk , who would rather sit in a swivel chair than run a cultivator ; Tommy Tompkins . who says he doesn't own a farm , and so wouldn't suffer , and the AAA committeemen who want to get farther and farther away from the milk stool and the hay rake . also Mr. Tullis from Montague who is drawing a fat salary and wants to make it fatter ; these are the forces who are bending every effort to choke this soil conservation district business down your throat , whether you like it or lump it . And if it should be adopted dire things could happen to many farmers of Oco- ana county . Every farm in Oceana county would be subject to its iron- clad brass teeth laws . The soil directors could come on your farm any time day or night to see if you are breaking any soil district rules . and for any sins of omission or commission you can be fined or jailed for tht offense is labeled a misdemeanor . And the directors can go upon your land with scores of workmen ( or loafers ) to build dikes , terrace outlets , check dams , contour furrowing and do engineering operations . And the expense , which might amount to several hundred dollars , will be assessed against your property . If the assessment is not paid your land will be sold for taxes . My friends , you don't want anything of this kind to happen . We are satisfied to let good enough alone . So when Mr. Tullis or Tommy Tompkins or Mr , Wenk on the soft - footed
