FIFTY CENTS A YEAR

-If

you are a farmer , why not grow some sorghum on your farm this year , enough for your family use anyway ? It will grow here in Oceana coun- ty and there is a sorghum mill within two miles of Hart . A number of farmers in this county are planning to grow some . It should be planted now in May . If you want to order some seed see the Hart Farm Bu- reau store at once or your favorite seedsman . A little sorghum in your pantry next winter might help out in your sugar problem . - Collins Drug Store sells Old South colognes , tender , romantic fragrance ; also things to chase the bugs away . adv . - Edward Jonassen and Tom No- bies came home from Ann Arbor on their Easter egg vacation to take up their yolk and to discuss optometry and rationing with their re- spective fathers . - Keith Corliss sells garden seeds to make little sprouts come up in your victory garden . And see these soil - less plant balls . adv . - George Crist , assistant at Silver Hills Farm , lives in a little cottage with his wife , and their evenings of quiet comfort alone are quite a contrast to the busy home life in Indiana when they were boarding half a dozen farm hands . - Paul Frishett has been holdin ' Evaline Holden at Crystal Valley and now she is going to marry him as he is holdin ' her to her promise . So pretty soon she won't be Holden but she will be holden . - Mrs . Mariah L. Billings , 94 , expires at the Soldiers Home in Grand Rapids . - Little Jeanine Krauter has a bicycle but she let it alone a long time so she wouldn't fall off and bump the road . Jeanine should find a nice green pasture field with a few yellow dandelions in it , then if she falls off she won't get bumped so hard be- cause she might land on a dandelion . - Jesse Crowner and wife have gone to Grand Haven to spend a week watching the steamboats come in . - Louis Meisch and wife came up from Stockbridge to hear John Schestag play a violin and the music of Mrs. Schestag's opening the oven door . Grace , one of the registered Guernsey cows at Silver Hills Farm , increased Paul Wiener's herd with a heifer calf . A bull calf from the herd was recently sold to E. E. Price of Fremont . - Reed Harris , who lives in Wakefield , will think he is in the right town if that new son keeps him awake walking the floor . - Pete Armstrong , the

grocer who sells Arm & Hammer , went to Manistee to see his mother- in - law . Betty Jane Sails should join the yacht club . So should Frank Mast and Art Flagg . - Stephanie Ryznar , a teacher in the Hart high school , went to Milwaukee for the week - end but did not take her violin along . - Patricia Woodlock of Grand Rapids was up to Pentwater to see her grandmother . Olive Sands . - Dr . and Mrs. C. W. Moore came up from Florida to dust off their porch chairs in Pentwater and Dr. Moore is soaking up his paint brushes in turpentine preparing to paint a picture of a choice landscape while Mrs. Moore is doubtless putting the finishing touches on some new anthology for the league of Ameri- can pen women . - Carl Hirleman moves now from Pentwater so he will be nearer to the bank vault in Shelby where he is cashier . Mr. Hirle- man served the Pentwater bank faithfully and well until it went into voluntary liquidation as a 51 % stockholder in Grand Haven wanted to retire . In the years Mr. Hirleman was pilot there he steered the finan- cial affairs of the Pentwater institution out of troubled waters until the stockholders could be paid off at 120 % on a share , which speaks well for his guiding hand - So David Cumming will like the Verbeck Tavern which he bought because it has two fireplaces , even as his fath- er's home in Mears had two , and he took a great deal of comfort watch- ing the evening flames . - Gentlemen of the Oceana county rationing board , it gives me great pleasure to appear before you this morning in negative behalf of the dune scooters . Your estimable floor lady , Betty Jane Sails , in your subterranean office under the bank building , says what is my interest and I wish to inform you that it is 100 per cent . These devastating , gas - eating quadrupeds or centipedes of many feats and seven to 11 wheels including the steering wheel ran full speed with banners flying last summer , using 106 tires and barrels and barrels of gasoline in a season of military crisis when the government of this United States of America was asking us to conserve on tires and go easy on the gasoline . Was there any patriotism in that devil - may - care devil take the hindmost procession of greed - and unrest over our sacred dunes which ought to be the abiding place of peace and quiet , which ought to be a safe playground for little children , and yet any moment one of these gas - eating . rubber - wasting go - devils might plunge over the hill to blot out these children's lives ? I appeal to you , Mr. Loree , if the principle in the abstract is not all wrong . I appeal to you , Mr. Sayles , because you are a hardware man , to get down to hard tacks and right this evil waste . The eminent professor of the gas buggies says rubber is the only thing and that there is no shortage of gas . Then how it is if I come to your store for even a gallon of kerosene I have to have a ration ticket ? I appeal to you , Mr. Roche , master of the cinema , and ask you to concede that the moving pieture of the 10- wheeler sailing along on the sand mountains is subordinate to our wartime economy and something which in the name of common sense onght to be banned for the duration ? Greed and conscience did not run hand in hand before them . Greed was there , but far too often a respect for law did not go along with it . I am here this morning to convince you that never at any time did the scune dooters comply with all the laws that they should have obeyed . Some of them ran for several years without any valid license plates whatever . Then the state police got after them . Some of them got passenger plates only and it took more legal pressure to convince them that commercial plates were necessary to carry fare - paying passengers . Some of them ran for years without

Page 3

any insurance for their passengers . Some of them employed teen - age boys for chauffeurs when their drivers should have been 21 years of age or older . Every day and every trip without legal conformity was a separate violation . If the scune dooters had been haled into court for one - quarter of the violations the coffers of Oceana county would be full . How many of these bus drivers were carrying certificates of health that the laws of Michigan require them to have ? Did you ever see one of these scune dooters with a Michigan Public Utilities metal plate on its anatomy ? Or did they have any certificates of convenience or neces- sity required by the state law for the operation of an omnibus line ? And when the United States revenue officer swooped down on the fleet did he find a single operator who had paid the 10 per cent federal amusement tax ? He taught them a lesson to the tune of a few hundred dollars . When the office of defense transportation put its ban on sightseeing taxicabs for the duration of the war , did it mean anything to the conscience of the scune dooters ? No , they sailed merrily on . So I come to you , gentlemen of the ration board , this spring morning , on behalf of the common man , and I ask you what are you going to do with the scune dooters ? Are you going to let them run free as the wind , unmindful of the conserving spirit of the times , oblivious of the letter and the spirit of the edicts of this wartime crisis , or are you going to set your foot down and tell them no more gas for the duration ? Even though it is springtime it is none to early to fill your coal bins for next winter , says Charles L. Flory of Shelby Ice & Fuel Co.
